Willie Brown Biography
Willie Brown is an American politician of the Democratic Party. He served for over 30 years in the California State Assembly, spending 15 years as its speaker. Brown later became mayor of San Francisco and was the first African American to hold that office.
In 1955, Brown graduated from San Francisco State University in 1955 and later earning a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1958. He became the first African-American speaker of the California State Assembly in 1980. He later then served as mayor of San Francisco.
From January 8, 1996, until January 8, 2004, Willie served as San Francisco mayor. His administration included more Asian-Americans, women, Latinos, gays, and African-Americans than the administrations of his predecessors. He was restricted by term limits from running for a third term as mayor and was succeeded by a political protege, Gavin Newsom. Brown later retired from politics.
Willie practiced criminal defense law, representing pimps, prostitutes and other clients that more prominent attorneys would not represent. He was one of the four African Americans in the Assembly in 1965. Brown continued to be reelected to the Assembly until 1995 where in the 1960s, he served as the Chair of the Legislative Representation Committee, a powerful Assembly position that helped him climb the Assembly ranks. He became the Democrats’ Assembly whip in 1969
He became California’s first African American Speaker of the Assembly and served in the office from 1981 to 1995. In 1990, later on, he helped negotiate an end to a 64-day budget standoff., he was was the de facto Speaker, In 1994, during their tenures.
The American politician led efforts in the Assembly for state universities to divest from South Africa and to increase AIDS research funding. he helped attain state funds for San Francisco, including funding for public health and mental health funds. late in 1992, he led state budget for 63 days until Governor Pete Wilson added another US$1.1 billion for public schools.
He supported the Peoples Temple, led by Jim Jones from 1975 to 1978, while it was being investigated for alleged criminal wrongdoing. He attended the Temple perhaps a dozen times where he served as master of ceremonies at a testimonial dinner for Jones where he stated in his introduction
In 1995, Willie contested for Mayor of San Francisco. wherein his announcement speech, he said San Francisco needed a “resurrection” and that he would bring the “risk-taking leadership” the city needed.
