Who is Todd Gloria?

Todd Gloria is an American Politician and current mayor of San Diego, he has been serving in that position since 2020. Moreover, he is a member of the Democratic Party, in addition, he is the first person of color to serve in that position. Furthermore, he is also the first gay person to be elected mayor in San Diego. 

Career

Early Career

He started his career in 2000 after he became Davis’s district director. Davis was Todd’s mentor since they met in 1992, at that time Davis was the director of the Aaron Price Fellows Program and Todd was a high school freshman. He served as Davis’s district director until 2008 after he was elected to the City Council.

San Diego City Council

Elections

in 2008 he decided to ran for the District 3 seat on the San Diego City Council. The seat was left vacant by his predecessor Toni Atkins. Moreover, during the primary, he didn’t receive the majority of votes as well as his competitor leading to a run-off election. After the run-off election, he won the election with 54.3% of the votes.

Gloria ran unopposed for re-election in 2012 and was re-elected in the June primary. Tenure

After taking the office, he was nominated as the chair of the city’s Budget and Finance Committee. He served in that position from 2011 to 2016. Furthermore, he represented San Diego on the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System Board and SANDAG, where he was also the chair of the transportation committee. In addition, after he was reelected in 2012, he was overwhelmingly voted in as the new Council President taking over from Tony Young.

The city council voted 4–5 on whether to reappoint Gloria as council president for the next term on December 10, 2014. In addition, Sherri Lightner joined the four council Republicans in voting no. Serving as Interim Mayor

After mayor Bob filmer stepped down from the mayoral position on August 30th, 2013. Todd was appointed to serve as interim mayor of San Diego the second largest city in the US. He was the first person to take the office as an openly gay person at that time.

He served until Mayor-elect Kevin Faulconer was sworn in on March 3, 2014. He remained a City Councilmember for District 3 and held the title of City Council President while acting as temporary mayor; however, City Council President Pro Tem Sherri Lightner performed the duties of the Council President. Gloria was considered a possible replacement for Filner, but she declined to run.

While acting as the mayor, Todd managed to reverse several of Filmner’s actions. First, he directed the city police to a zoning code to resume enforcement action against medical marijuana.

California State Assembly

On April 7th, 2015 confirmed his bid to run for the California State Assembly 78th District seat in the 2016 election. At that time the position was held by Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins, who was termed out. Soon after declaring his bid, he was endorsed by Atkin and Sarah Boot. Previously, Sarah had declared her candidacy and stepped down after Todd announced his candidacy.

Gloria comfortably defeated his relatively unknown Republican opponent on November 8, 2016, with the second-largest margin of victory in San Diego County. After serving for the first in 2018, both the primary and general elections, he was easily re-elected with over 70% of the vote.

Gloria was appointed by Speaker Anthony Rendon to the Democratic leadership in the Assembly as Assistant Majority Whip shortly after taking office in 2016. In January 2018, he became Majority Whip.

Mayor of San Diego

On January 9, 2019, he declared his candidacy for mayor of San Diego in 2020. Mostly, his campaign mostly focused on issues such as the Housing crisis, transportation, and climate change.

After announcing, his candidacy he was backed by several leaders including governor Gavin Newsom, Jerry Brwon, and Mara Elliott. During the August 20, 2019 election he defeated his competitor and won the San Diego County Democratic Party’s endorsement vote. Moreover, he received 70% of the vote exceeding the required amount of 60%.

Moreover, in August 2019, he was accused of collecting funds for his 2020 reelection campaign to the state Assembly before filing his intention to run for the position in violation of state law. In his response, he claimed that it was technical oversight and filed the relevant paperwork the following day.

Gloria received the most votes in the primary election. Then proceeded to the general election, where he faced Barbara Bry in the general election. In the November 3 election, he was elected mayor, becoming the first Native American and Filipino-American mayor elected in a US city of over a million people.
