Edmunds announced on January 6, 2018, his decision to forgo his remaining eligibility and enter the 2018 NFL Draft. He and his brother Tramaine released joint statements on their Twitter accounts regarding their declaration for the draft. He participated in the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. But because of a pre-existing shoulder injury and developing cramps, he was unable to perform all of the combine and positional drills. He again participated on March 14, 2018, at Virginia Tech’s pro day but opted to stand on his combined numbers and only performed positional drills. At the end of the pre-draft process, he was projected to be a third-round pick by the majority of NFL scouts and experts. In addition, he has also ranked the 3rd best strong safety in the draft by DraftScout.com, and the NFL analyst Mike Mayock ranked him as the sixth-best safety.

Terrell was selected in the first round (28th overall) of the 2018 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Pittsburgh Steelers on July 24, 2018, signed Terrell to a four-year $10.80 million contract that includes a signing bonus of $6 million. Throughout the training camp, he competed to be a starting safety against veterans Sean Davis and Morgan Burnett.
