Who Is Sylvester Turner?

Sylvester Turner is an American politician and a Lawyer. Currently, he is the 62nd mayor of Houston, Texas.

In addition, he is a member of the Democratic Party. Moreover, Turner was a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1989 until 2016.

Turner was elected for the first time as mayor of Houston in 2015. He won against Bill King in a runoff by 4,082 votes out of 212,696 voted in the closest mayoral race in Houston history by percentage.

He was then elected for the second term as mayor on December 14, 2019, with a 56-44% vote margin over the more conservative Tony Buzbee, despite a turnout of fewer than 20% of registered voters.

After graduating from law school, he joined the law firm of Fulbright & Jaworski. After that, he founded his own firm, Barnes & Turner in 1983. However, Turner lost the race as a result of the ensuing controversy. Turner filed a libel lawsuit against Dolcefino and KTRK and was given a $5.5 million libel settlement. However, the compensation was later lowered to $3.25 million by the presiding court.

Following the decision of a court, KTRK filed an appeal. However, the Texas Supreme Court reversed the monetary judgment based on the enhanced legal rights afforded to the media by the First Amendment. However, the court determined that both of these specific broadcasts were false and defamatory.
