Who is Stephen Breyer?

Stephen Breyer is an American lawyer and jurist. He has served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States since 1994. Stephen was appointed by President Bill Clinton and replaced retiring justice, Harry Blackmun.

He is usually associated with the liberal wing of the Court.
Stephen attended the University of Oxford as a Marshall Scholar after having attended Stanford University. He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1964. From 1967 to 1980 Stephen was a lecturer and a law professor at Harvard Law after a clerkship with Associate Justice Arthur Goldberg from 1964 to 1965.

Despite holding prominent positions, Stephen was appointed in the supreme court as special assistant to the United States Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust and assistant special prosecutor on the Watergate Special Prosecution Force in 1973. From 1980 to 1994, he served on the First Circuit Court of Appeals.

Stephen tries to communicate his views on legal theory in his 2005 book Active Liberty. He argues that the judiciary should find a way to settle issues in a way that will motivate public participation in government decisions.

Stephen Breyer career

From 1964 to 1965 Stephen served in the U.S. Supreme Court as a law clerk to associate justice Arthur Goldberg and as a fact-checker for the Warren Commission after his law school. He was also a special assistant to the U.S Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division, Assistant Attorney General.
In 1967 Stephen returned to Harvard School of Law as an assistant professor where he taught to 1980. However, he held a joint appointment at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government from 1977 to 1980.
