In addition, she served on the Judiciary Non-Civil, Ethics, Appropriations and Ways & Means committees. The Democratic caucus elected Abrams to replace DuBose Porter as minority leader over Virgil Fludd in November 2010. She also co-sponsored the legislation that preserved the HOPE program in 2011 which in return lowered the scholarship amount paid to students in Georgia as well as a 1% low-interest loan program for students.

Tax Reduction

Time magazine wrote that Abrams may as well have stopped the largest tax increase in Georgia history. Abrams argued that Republican’s suggestion to cut income taxes while raising the tax on cable services would resultingly lead to a net increase in taxes paid by the majority of the people. Also, she partnered with Deal on criminal justice reforms that reduced prison costs without raising the crime rate and with Republicans on the state of Georgia’s biggest public transportation funding package.

2018 Georgia’s Gubernatorial Campaign

In 2018, Abrams ran for Georgia’s governor position. She ran against Stacey Evans in the Democratic Party primary election which was somewhat a battle of the Staceys. Bernie Sanders and Our Revolution endorsed Abrams who won the Democratic Party’s nomination on May 22. Abrams attained a number of high profile endorsements including former president Barrack Obama. She was therefore running against the Republican nominee, Georgia Secretary of state Brian Kemp.

However, Abrams lost the general elections for the seat of the governor to Kemp with 50,000 votes. She later announced during her speech that ended her campaign, the formation of Fair Fight Action. This was a non-profit voting rights organisation that sued the Secretary of State and state election board for voter suppression in federal court. The lawsuit was still going on as of March 2020. On losing the election, Abram repeatedly claimed that the election was unfairly conducted. She continues to deny Kemp asĀ  Georgia’s legitimate governor.

In January 2019, Chuck Schumer, the Senate Minority Leader made an announcement that Abrams would deliver the response to the state of the Union address on February 5. She became the first African-American woman to deliver the rebuttal to the address as well as the first person with no official post to do so since the State of the Union response began in 1966.
