Sam Mikulak Biography

Sam Mikulak is an American artistic gymnast who is a six-time U.S. national all-around champion (2013-2016, 2018-2019). He is also the 2018 World bronze medalist on high bar, and a two-time Olympian (2012 Olympics in London and 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro).

Mikulak is also an eight-time NCAA champion, winning the team, individual all-around and several individual event titles at the 2011, 2013 and also 2014 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships. Sam trains at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Samuel Anthony Mikulak was born on 13 October 1992 in Corona del Mar, California, United States. He is 26 years old as of 2019. He lives in Colorado, Springs, Colorado.

Sam Mikulak Family

Mikulak was born to Stephen Mikulak an orthopedic surgeon and Tina Mikulak. Both his parents competed in gymnastics at the University of California, Berkeley, and started Sam in gymnastics at age two. Sam also has a younger sister Alexandra Mikulak, who started gymnastics at two as well but stopped at a young age.

Sam was a member of the Junior National team from 2007 to 2010. Mikulak won the all-around title as well as the floor exercise and vault titles at the 2010 Junior Olympic Nationals.

Mikulak attended Corona del Mar High School and later enrolled at the University of Michigan.

Sam Mikulak College Career

Mikulak was a member of the Michigan Wolverines men’s gymnastics team from 2010 to 2014. Being the anchor of the team, Mikulak led Michigan to the NCAA team title in 2013 and 2014. He won the the individual all-around title with a career-high score of 90.75 as a freshman at the 2011 NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championships. Mikulak won the Big Ten Conference title on high bar and pommel horse and placed second in the all-around as a sophomore in 2012. He was the first male gymnast from the University of Michigan to qualify for the Olympics. He also won the all-around, parallel bars, and high bar titles. Mikulak also won the all-around and parallel bars titles at the 2014 NCAA Championships. In August 2014, Mikulak was named undergraduate assistant coach for the University of Michigan men’s team.

He won the bronze medal in the individual all-around and silver medal on the individual parallel bars event at the 2012 U.S. National Championships. Mikulak was unable to compete at the 2012 U.S. Olympic in five of the six events on Day 2 after spraining his ankle while competing on vault on the first night of competition. He was selected for the five-man Olympic gymnastics team despite his injury. Mikulak was the first male gymnast from the University of Michigan to be named to the U.S. Olympic team.

He placed 5th with the U.S. team in the team competition at the 2012 Olympics in London. This U.S. team had placed 1st in the qualification round. He competed in the vault final, placing 5th. Mikulak’s Michigan  teammate Syque Caesar also competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics, representing Bangladesh.

Sam won his first national all-around title at the 2013 U.S. National Championships in Hartford, Connecticut. Mikulak also won the gold medal on parallel bars and high bar and competed at the 2013 World Championships. There, he placed 6th in the individual all-around final and 4th in the individual high bar final. He won a Second National Title at the 2014 World Championships and placing 12th in the all-around final.

In March 2015, he represented the U.S. against a strong international field at the 2015 AT&T American Cup at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. This was along with Simone Biles, MyKayla Skinner and Donnell Whittenburg. Mikulak won his third consecutive national all-around title at the 2015 U.S. National Championships in Indianapolis on 16 August 2015. He then won the gold medal on vault and parallel bars and won the bronze medal on pommel horse and high bar.

He won the all-around title at the Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas, with a two-day score of 177.50 on 21 February, 2016. Mikulak placed first at the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials in St. Louis, Missouri on 25 June 2016, and qualified for his second Olympic team.

He placed fifth with the U.S. team in the team competition at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He also went on to place seventh in the all-around final and fourth in the high bar final. In the qualification round, the men’s team had placed second in the qualification round.

At the 2019 American Cup, an FIG All-Around World Cup event, he placed second in the all-around. He was just 0.001 of a point behind fellow American and the event’s two-time defending champion Yul Moldauer.

He competed at the 2019 FIG All-Around World Cup in Tokyo, Japan in April. Mikulak went on to win the all-around gold medal with a score of 86.599 ahead of the defending gold and silver medalists from Japan— Kenzō Shirai. Shirai won the bronze medal while still recovering from injury, and Wataru Tanigawa (85.665), who successfully defended his silver medal.

Sam competed at the 2019 U.S. National Championships in August. Mikulak went ahead to win his record-breaking sixth all-around title, as well as gold medals on floor exercise, pommel horse, parallel bars, and high bar. Mikulak’s margin of victory in the all-around was the largest of any of his national titles.
