Sam Darnold (born Samuel Richard Darnold) is a well-known American football quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL (National Football League). In addition to playing in the NFL, he played college football at the University of Southern California where he became the first freshman to win the Archie Griffin Award. He was selected by the New York Jets third overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.
At the age of 21, he was the youngest opening-day starting quarterback since the AFL-NFL merger. From 2018 to 2020, he served as the Jets’ starter but due to inconsistent play and injuries, he was traded to the Carolina Panthers in 2021. Following two seasons with the Panthers, he joined the 49ers.

In his freshman year at San Clemente High School, he played baseball, football, and basketball. During his high school basketball career, he excelled and was named South Coast League Most Valuable Player twice, along with being named to the all-CIF team. Much of his junior, he missed due to an injury. In the 2015 season, he redshirted for his freshman year as he was behind Cody Kessler and Max Browne on the depth chart.
Sam Darnold 2016 Season
Entering the 2016 season as a redshirt freshman, he was the second-string quarterback behind Max Browne. In his first career start with USC, he completed 18-of-26 passes for 253 yards and recorded a touchdown as USC lost 27-31 to the Utah Utes. After this loss, his Trojans did not lose a game for the remainder of the season, including a 26-13 upset win over the #4 ranked Washington Huskies. It was announced on January 4, 2017, that he was awarded the Archie Griffin Award, which was awarded annually to college football’s most valuable player to his team throughout the season.

On August 10, he made his professional debut in the first preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons. In the game, he finished with 96 passing yards and a touchdown as the Jets won 17-0. The Jets then named Sam the starter for week 1 of the season on August 29. On September 10, 2018, he played his first regular season game during Monday Night Football against the Detroit Lions. This made him the youngest opening-day starting quarterback since the AFL-NFL merger.

In week 1, during the Jets’ home opener against the Buffalo Bills, he finished with 179 passing yards and a touchdown. It was reported on September 12, that he was diagnosed with mononucleosis and he subsequently missed three games. He returned in Week 6 against the Dallas Cowboys where he finished with 338 passing yards, two touchdowns, and an interception as the Jets won 24-22. In week 8 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, he finished with 218 passing yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions as the Jets lost 29-15. The following week against the Miami Dolphins, he finished with 260 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception as the Jets lost 26-18. In week 14 during a rematch with the Dolphins, he finished the 2019 season with 3,024 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions, and had 33 carries for 62 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns.

In week 1 during the season opener against the Buffalo Bills, he finished with 215 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception as the Jets lost 27-17. During the Jets’ home opener against the San Francisco 49ers, he finished with 179 passing yards and a touchdown as the Jets lost 31-13. After a game in week 4 against the Denver Broncos, Sam sustained a shoulder injury after a sack. After missing two games due to shoulder soreness, he returned in week 7 against the Bills, finishing with 120 passing yards and two interceptions as the Jets lost 18-10.
He reaggravated his shoulder injury in week 8 against the Kansas City Chiefs, thus he missed the Jets’ two games. He made his return in a game against the Miami Dolphins in week 12. Sam finished the season with 2,208 passing yards, nine touchdowns, and 11 interceptions to go along with 217 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in 12 games as the Jets finished 2-14.

On September 12, 2021, he made his first start for the Panthers, facing his former team, the New York Jets.
