Who is Ruth Porat?

Ruth Porat is an American business executive serving as CFO of Google parent company Alphabet since 2015. Previously, she served as the Executive Vice President of Morgan Stanley between January 2010 and May 2015.

She was one of the few top female executives who participated in the Google Walkout for Real Change and also fielded questions from employees. Porat was listed as the 21st most powerful woman in the world by Forbes in 2018. She was also ninth on Fortune’s Most Powerful Women list.

Porat began her career at Morgan Stanley in 1987 and later left in 1993 to follow Morgan Stanley President Robert F. Greenhill to Smith Barney. In 1996, she returned to Morgan Stanley. She led the Morgan Stanley team during a financial crisis advising the United States Department of the Treasury regarding Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and the New York Federal Reserve Bank with respect to AIG.

It was then reported in 2013 that President Barack Obama would nominate Porat as the next Deputy Secretary of the Treasury. It was later reported by Bloomberg News and the New York Times that she had contacted White House officials to withdraw her name from consideration. Porat wanted to improve conditions at Morgan Stanley.

Her career was analyzed in the McKinsey & Company study “How Remarkable Women Lead”. Porat was then named “Best Financial Institutions CFO” in a poll conducted by Institutional Investor for its “2014 All-America Executive Team”.
