An Amateur Career

While attending high school, as a junior he was the Los Angeles Times high school baseball player of the year after hitting .429 with four home runs. He then played in the Under Armour All-American Game in the summer of 206 at Wrigley Field and the Perfect Game All-American Classic at Petco Park. This resulted in him being named MVP of both games. In his first three years of high school, he played mostly third base and outfield before moving to shortstop in his senior year. moreover, he was considered one of the top prospects for the 2017 Major League Baseball draft. But before the draft, he committed to playing college baseball at the University of California. In 2017, he was named California’s Baseball Gatorade Player of the Year after batting .377 with four home runs and 25 stolen bases as a senior.

A Professional Career

Lewis was selected by the Minnesota Twins with the first overall selection of the 2017 draft. On June 17, the Twins announced his signing and he made his professional debut on June 26 with the Gulf Coast League Twins of the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League. Because of his exemplary performance, he was promoted to the Cedar Rapids Kernels of the Class A Midwest League on August 12. Overall, finished 2017 with a combined .279 batting average, 4 home runs, 27 RBIs, and 18 stolen bases in 54 games between both clubs.

He began the 2018 season with Cedar Rapids. In 75 games for Cedar Rapids, he batted .315 with 9 home runs and 53 RBIs along with 50 runs scored and 22 stolen bases. Lewis was promoted to the Fort Myers Miracle of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League on July 14, 2018. MLB.com ranked him on July 26, 2018, as the 10th best prospect in baseball. He ended his time in Fort Myers and has batted .255 with 5 home runs and 21 RBIs in 46 games. Following the 2018 season, he along with teammate Alex Kirilloff was named to the Midwest League postseason all-star team.

In addition, he was also named the MVP of the Midwest League. In 2019, the Twins invited him to spring training as a non-roster player. He then returned to Fort Myers to begin the 2019 season. And was then promoted to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos of the Class AA Southern League in July. Lewis was also selected to play in the Arizona Fall League for the Salt River Rafters following the season.

He was so named the 2019 Arizona Fall League MVP. However, he was diagnosed with an ACL tear on February 24, 2021, and had surgery set for February 26. Because of the injury that required nine months of recovery, he missed entirely the 2021 season. On November 19, 2021, he was selected to the 40-man roster following the season. Finally, he debuted for the Twins on May 6, 2022.
