Who is Ron Johnson?

Ron Johnson is an American businessman and politician serving as Wisconsin’s senior United States Senator as well as a member of the Republican Party. Johnson was elected to the Senate defeating Democratic incumbent Russ Feingold in 2010.

He was then reelected in 2016 defeating Feingold again. Johnson was chief executive officer of a plastics and polyester manufacturing company founded by his brother in law before joining politics.

Career

Business Career

In 1979, Johnson together with his wife, Jane moved to Oshkosh where they started working with Jane’s brother, Pat Curler at his sheet extruder company. The name of the company was PACUR. Curler established the company using funding from his father’s, Howard Curler, and his own money. Howard has been the chief executive officer of the Bemis Company which is a giant plastic company since 1978. Interestingly, Bemis was PACUR’s only customer for the first several years of its existence.

Johnson worked as PACUR’s machine operator and accountant. The company later turned to speciality plastics used in packaging of medical devices. It also started hiring salespersons and exporting products to other countries. Johnson became the CEO after Pat Curler left PACUR in the mid-1980s. Later in 1987, the Curler family sold the company to Bowater Industries for a total sum of $18 million. However, Johnson bought PACUR back from Bowater in 1997 where he remained the CEO until he joined the Senate in 2010.

Political Career

Johnson first ran for elected office in 2010 when he vied for the U.S Senate. He had no history in politics which caused him to be described as a political blank slate. He also attracted the interest of the Tea Party Movement when he gave two emotionally moving speeches at one of their rallies. The Republican primary, Johnson ran a hugely financed campaign where he defeated Watertown businessman Dave Westlake and Stephen Flake with 85% on September 14, 2010.

While still a candidate, Johnson opposed the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. He started his campaign by saying to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the United States would be better not spending any money but instead let the recovery happen. In addition, the newspaper reported in 2009 that the education council that Johnson led considered applying for stimulus money but in the long run elected not to.

In 2010, Johnson raised $15.2  for his Senate campaign $9 million of which was his own money. His financial disclosures revealed that PACUR had paid him $10 million in compensation in June 2011. The compensation scattered for the duration between 1997 to 2011 after which he took no salary from PACUR. As CEO, he also said that he had personally decided on the dollar amount. It was also unrelated to the donations he had made for his campaign.

2016 Election

In March 2013, Johnson made an announcement that he would run for reelection in 2016. He was endorsed again by the Club for Growth which was a fiscally conservative group. Johnson is a firm supporter of Donald Trump. He authorised several investigations into Trump’s political opponents using his position as chairman of Senate Homeland Security Committee.
