Who is Roger Marshall?

Roger Marshall is an American Politician, currently serving as the junior United States Senator from Kansas since 2021. He is a member of the Republican Party and he served as the US. A representative for Kansas’s 1st congressional district from 2017 to 2021.

Furthermore, in 2016, he was elected to Congress for the first time, defeating incumbent Tim Huelskamp in the Republican primary for Kansas’ 1st congressional district. He declared his candidacy for the United States Senate in the 2020 election on September 7, 2019, seeking the seat vacated by Pat Roberts. After that, Marshall defeated Democratic candidate Barbara Bollier in the Republican primary on August 4 and was elected on November 3rd. On January 3, 2021, Marshall was sworn in.

Marshall joined a coalition of Republican senators led by Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz in an unsuccessful attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election outcome in January 2021. Moreover, on January 6, he voted in favor of the objections to the electoral votes in Pennsylvania and Arizona, which were also unanimously opposed by the Senate, 92-7 and 93-6, respectively.

Career

Marshall ran against congressman Tim Huelskamp in the Republican Party primary election for Kansas’s 1st congressional district in the United States House of Representatives. Many Kansas agricultural organizations supported him, as they were outraged that Huelskamp had lost his position on the House Agriculture Committee, the first time in a century that no Kansan had served on that body. During the primary, Huelskamp’s team aired TV advertisements blaming Marshall over a 2008 altercation with a neighbor over a property dispute; the neighbor called 9-1-1 accusing Marshall of trying to drive him over with a car. Formal paraphrase

Marshall then pled no contest to a misdemeanor dangerous driving charge and dismissed the neighbor’s civil suit. Marshall beat Huelskamp in the Republican primary on August 2 by a margin of 56 percent to 44 percent. In the overwhelmingly Republican district, no Democrat filed to run. Marshall easily won the general election, beating independent Alan LaPolice and Libertarian Kerry Burt with 65.9 percent of the vote. He was sworn in on January 3, 2017

Rogers announced in September 2019 that he would resign from the House of Representatives to run for the Senate seat being vacated by four-term incumbent Pat Roberts. Rogers ran against Kris Kobach, a divisive former Kansas Secretary of State and Trump ally, in the Republican primary race. Marshall was backed by the US Chamber of Commerce, the Kansas Farm Bureau, and other anti-abortion groups. In the week before the race, the National Republican Senatorial Committee initiated “Operation Scorched Prairie,” a massive voter engagement campaign on Marshall’s behalf that resulted in 2.3 million unique voter contacts via text and robocalls.

Rival campaigns and outside groups (super PACs) spent millions on attack ads; The primaries were expected to be close, but Marshall eventually won by 14.2 percentage points with 40.3% of the vote, though second place (Kobach) and third place (Kansas City plumber Bob Hamilton) combined for a total higher. He won in all except one county which is west of Emporia. In Sedgwick County, which contains Wichita, he outperformed Kobach by 47% to 26%. He lost by a majority in Wyandotte County, which contains Kansas City, and by plurality in most eastern Kansas counties. He went against Democratic State Senator Barbara Bollier in the general election and he ended up defeating him. In doing so, he continued a long list of former “Big First” congressmen who later represented Kansas in the Senate; Due to his large size, the district congressman is generally considered a state political figure.

Marshall challenged the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, alleging that “governors, secretaries of states, and progressive judges” in “several states” usurped legislators to create voting laws. As a result, he declared his opposition to the confirmation of the Electoral College count scheduled for January 6, 2021. The Kansas Democratic Party has called for his resignation from Congress for failing to “execute his oath of office to uphold and protect the United States Constitution” as a result of his refusal to certify the count. Marshall “should be embarrassed” of his attempt to accept unfounded accusations of voting fraud and threaten to reverse the election, according to the McPherson Sentinel editorial board.
