Playing career
Roberto began his professional career at AC Milan. He then spent 4 seasons on loan to lower divisions clubs (Serie B to Serie C2). De Zerbi spent the 1999-2000 Serie C1 season in Como together with Luca Saudati of Milan and Alberto Comazzi. Half of the registration rights were also sold to Salernitana in the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons. Milan then bought him back from Salernitana in June 2002 and sold him to U.S. Foggia.
He later signed for Serie A side Napoli from Catania in 2006 for €2.5 million. Napoli then revealed his loan transfer to Romanian Liga I club CFR Cluj on February 8, 2010, with the deal being made permanent on a 3-year deal on August 31, 2010.

Palermo
Roberto was named head coach of Serie A club Palermo on September 6, 2016, after Davide Ballardini’s exit by mutual consent because of disagreements with the board. His time at the helm of the Sicilians turned out to be negative, with 7 consecutive losses and no points at home in 3 months. Following a penalty shootout elimination in a home match against Serie B club Spezia, he was fired on November 30, 2016, and replaced with former team captain Eugenio Corini.
Benevento
De Zerbi was then named head coach of 2017-18 Serie A newcomers Benevento on October 23, 2017. Although the side was relegated back to Serie B at the end of the season, he was praised for his possession-based, attacking football and transfer business.
Sassuolo
He was appointed manager of Sassuolo on June 13, 2018. During his time, Sassuolo were praised for their footballing style coupled with overachieving results, which led the small Emilia-based club to 2 consecutive 8th-place spots in the Italian top flight. Roberto was announced on May 25, 2021, as the new head coach of Ukrainian Premier League club Shakhtar Donetsk. On September 22, De Zerbi won the Ukrainian Super Cup against Dynamo Kyiv at the Olympic Stadium in Kyiv, becoming the first Italian manager to win the title. Roberto then left the club in July 2022, because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He was able to leave the club at the top of the UPL during the unfinished season.

He then lost his first game at Brighton’s home stadium of Falmer Stadium, calling his players ”fantastic” despite the 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on October 9. Roberto earned his first win against the manager he replaced in Graham Potter, thrashing his Chelsea team 4-1 on October 29.
He went 3 games unbeaten against Liverpool in his debut campaign at Brighton, consisting beating them as defending champions in the FA Cup 4th round on January 29, 2023. Roberto was then sent off in the tunnel by referee Darren England after Brighton’s 1-0 home loss over Fulham on February 18. He was shown the red card for complaining he had lost time to prepare for the match because of a meeting about refereeing during the week. In a post-match interview, he said the ”level of refereeing in the Premier League is very bad,” whilst also criticizing Darren stating that he ”wasn’t in a good attitude.” De Zerbi was later banned from the touchline for one game and fined £15,000 by the FA in the wake of his red card in the Fulham game on March 3.
