Robert enrolled in 2012 at Indiana State and began for four years after redshirting his first year. He then appeared in 11 games in 2013, starting 3 as a quarterback. Tonyan’s first career completion was a 57-yard touchdown, and he finished 35 of 102 passes for 348 yards and 3 touchdowns. In his 2nd year, he moved to wide receiver, where he caught 54 passes for 747 yards (6th in school history) and 4 touchdowns. Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions signed him to a 3-year, $1.66 million deal as an undrafted free agent on May 12, 2017. Tonyan’s signing made him the 10th Indiana State football player to reach the NFL, however, he was released prior to the season beginning.

Green Bay Packers

He was signed to the Packers’ practice team for the final 4 games of the 2017 season and was re-signed for the 2018 season. Tonyan appeared in the first 9 games of the season but was targeted only once before his first NFL reception, a 54-yard touchdown from Aaron Rodgers over the Seattle Seahawks in Week 11. He then totaled 4 receptions for 77 receiving yards and 1 touchdown in the 2018 season. The Packers then tendered exclusive rights to him in 2019. He caught a 12-yard pass for a touchdown in a 20-15 victory against the Washington Redskins on December 8, 2019. Tonyan totaled 10 receptions for 100 receiving yards in the 2019 season.

The Packers re-signed him as an exclusive-rights free agent putting him under contract in Green Bay for another year on April 24, 2020. He then caught an 11-yard touchdown pass in a 42-21 win against the Detroit Lions in Week 2, on September 20, 2020. In a nationally televised Monday Night Football game, he caught 6 passes for 98 yards, including 3 touchdown passes to guide the Packers against the Atlanta Falcons 30-16 on October 5, 2020. In the NFC Championship against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he posted 4 catches for 22 yards and a touchdown during the 31-26 defeat.

On March 17, 2021, the team placed a second-round restricted free-agent tender on him. On May 27, he signed his tender worth $3.4 million. He then tore the ACL in his left knee during the team’s Week 8 game over the Arizona Cardinals on October 28, 2021, forcing him to miss the rest of the 2021 season. Tonyan was placed on injured reserve on November 1, 2021. Later, he re-signed with the team on a 1-year deal on March 20, 2022.
