Who is Robert Maclennan?

Robert Maclennan, Baron Maclennan of Rogart was a British Liberal Democrat politician, formerly a life peer. Maclennan served as the last leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He served during the negotiations that led to its merger with the Liberal Party in 1988. He later became a joint interim leader of the new party which is known as the Social and Liberal Democrats (SLD) it later became the Liberal Democrats.

From 1966 to 2001, Maclennan also served as a Member of Parliament (MP). He was then elevated to the House of Lords.

He later became a member of the Labour Party and he served as a junior minister in the Labour government of 1974–1979. In 1981, he defected to become a founder member of the SDP. He served as one of the few SDP MPs to keep their seats in the 1983 general election. Later after his stint as SDP Leader in 1988 Maclennan served as a front bench spokesman for the Liberal Democrats. From 1994 to 1998, he served as their president.

In 1997, he was appointed to the Privy Council. Maclennan retired after the 2001 general election. After this, he was raised to the House of Lords and elevated to a life peer as Baron Maclennan of Rogart, of Rogart in Sutherland. He served as the party’s Cabinet Office and Scotland spokesman in the House of Lords until the year 2015.
