Rob Edwards, Robert William Edwards, is a famous professional football manager and former player. Edwards played for Football League One side Exeter City prior to retiring in May 2011. He is a Welsh international, capped on four occasions. Edwards was appointed the manager of Tranmere Rovers in May 2014 and fired from the post in October of the same year. Playing career
Rob, a defender, began his career as a trainee with Carlisle, playing in 56 first-team games with the club. He finished a £135,000 transfer to then Division 2 side Bristol City. In more than 8 seasons at Ashton Gate, he made 266 appearances and received his first cap for Wales. On August 8, 1999, he moved on a free to then League One side Preston North End, where he played an important role in their title win, and promotion to the second tier.
Edwards then moved to League 1 side Blackpool where he made 69 appearances on July 1, 2004. This was prior to being released on a free at the conclusion of the 2005-06 season by manager Simon Grayson. Edwards scored once during his spell at Blackpool, in a 2-1 loss to Sheffield Wednesday in August 2004. Following playing on trial with his first club Carlisle and also League Twp side Rochdale, he was snapped up by Conference National side Exeter City. Following signing for the Grecians in 2006, Edwards established himself as a first-team regular in the heart of the defense for Exeter City. City manager Paul Tisdale appointed him as player-coach at Exeter in December 2007, coaching the reserves, while still being a member of the first team.
Actually, Edwards was the only member of the team to begin in all 46 matches of Exeter’s 2007-08 campaign. That season culminated in his scoring the winning goal at Wembley in the club’s 2008 Conference National play-off Final victory against Cambridge United on May 18, 2008, securing the club’s return to the Football League.
