 Who is Ricky Rubio?

Richard Rubio Vives (Ricky Rubio) is a famous Spanish professional basketball player for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He became the youngest player to ever play in the Spanish ACB League on October 15, 2005, aged 14. Rubio aged 16, on October 24, 2006, made his EuroLeague debut. Since 2000, Ricky is the fifth-youngest player to make their debut in the EuroLeague. He was then drafted with the fifth selection in the first round of the 2009 NBA draft by the Timberwolves, becoming the first player born in the 1990s to be drafted by the NBA.

The Timberwolves agreed in principle with his former Spanish team, DKV Joventut, to purchase his contract, but he stepped out of the deal. Joventut traded the rights to Rubio to FC Barcelona, and the next day he signed a six-year contract with FC Barcelona. He joined the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2011 and spent six seasons in Minnesota before his trade to the Utah Jazz in June 2017. Rubio signed with the Phoenix Suns in July 2019, before coming back to Minnesota in 2020.

2009 NBA draft

The Minnesota Timberwolves obtained the 5th pick in the 2009 NBA draft on June 24, 2009. Darius Songalia, Etan Thomas, and Oleksiy Pecherov from the Washington Wizards were traded for Mike Miller and Randy Foye. Minnesota picked Rubio with the 5th pick, making him the first player born in the 1990s to be drafted. The team had a sum of four first-round picks in the 2009 NBA draft. They utilized the 6th and 18th picks in the first round and selected two other point Guards, Ty Lawson from North Carolina and Jonny Flynn from Syracuse, shocking many in the NBA. Lawson’s rights were soon sold out to the Denver Nuggets. The Timberwolves later used the 28th pick to choose Wayne Ellington, a shooting guard from North Carolina.

The next day, Ricky’s father told a Spanish media outlet his son might go back to Spain for at least one more season. Rubio did not go to an introductory press conference by the Timberwolves. He had a buyout clause in his Joventut contract reported by various media outlets as ranging from $6.6 million to 8.2 million. Timberwolves general manager David Kahn accepted that Ricky would probably have to play one more season in Spain to reduce or evade the buyout.

After the draft

The Associated Press reported on July 22, that Rubio was seeking to leave Joventut, regardless of whether he was able to come to the NBA. It indicated that the ACB powers FC Barcelona and Real Madrid were both interested in signing Ricky if he could not instantly return to the NBA. The main hindering block to Rubio’s NBA transfer was a clause in the league’s collective bargaining agreement that hindered a team from paying more than $500,000 toward a player’s contract buyout.

Kahn believed Rubio and his family were being pressured by the Spanish media, his national teammates, and people in his hometown to stay in Spain. ESPN reported his original buyout with Joventut was €3.5 million ($5.0 million) and revealed on September 1 he had signed a six-year contract with the club. The contract gave him the option to go to the NBA after the 2010-11 season, with ESPN reporting the buyout at that time would be a more manageable $1.4 million, (of which the Timberwolves could pay $500,000).
