Who is Richard Burr?

Richard Burr is an American politician whose the senior United States Senator from North Carolina as from 2005. He is a member of the Republican Party. He is also a previous member of the United States House of Representatives.

Burr joined the U.S House of Representatives in 1994 via election representing North Carolina’s 5th Congressional district as part of the Republican Revolution. In 2004, Burr was first elected to the U.S Senate. He also served as the chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee from 2015 to 2020. Later in 2016, Burr had announced that he would be running for re-election in 2022. However, amid investigations by the FBI regarding allegations of insider trading during the COVID-19 pandemic, Burr stepped down temporarily from his post as chair.

Burr worked as a sales manager for Carswell Distributing Company for 17 years which was a distributor of lawn equipment. He is also a board member of Brenner Children’s Hospital as well as the West Point board of visitors.

Political career

Time at House of Representatives

In 1992, Burr ran for the seat in the Wiston-Salem-based 5th District against Democratic Representative Stephen L. Neal but lost. He then ran again in 1994 after Neal prompted not to run for re-election. Burr got elected for congress during which Republicans faced a landslide in their votes. During his time in the House, Burr came up with the FDA Modernization Act of 1997. In addition, he aided the creation of the National Institute for Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. He also successfully sponsored amendments to improve defence against bioterrorism in consideration of the 9/11 attacks. Burr partnered with Senator Kit Bond to co-sponsor an amendment of the Energy Policy Act of 2003 relaxing restrictions on the export of specific types of enriched uranium.

The original policy was enacted in the Schumer amendment to the Energy Policy Act in 1992. Highly enriched Uranium (HEU) is attractive to terrorists as it can be used to make simple nuclear weapons. Burr’s amendment sought to place restrictions on U.S civilian export of HEU weapon-grade. This was to encourage foreign users to switch to low enriched Uranium which cannot be used directly in the making of nuclear weapons. Burr never dropped below 62% of the votes during he was re-elected four times unopposed, even in 2002.

Burr, won the Republican primary seeking the U.S Senate in July 2004 after being vacated by Democrat John Edward who had retired to run for Vice President under presidential candidate John Kerry. Burr won by 5% point. on November 2, 2010, Burr defeated the Secretary of State of North Carolina with 55% of the votes. He became the first Republican from North Carolina since Jesse Helms to be reelected to the U.S Senate. In 2016, Burr won against Democrat nominee Deborah Ross by a margin of 51-45. In addition, he was the advisor for Trump’s presidential bid election. on 20th July 2016, Burr announced during his re-election campaign that he would not be seeking reelection to a fourth term in 2022 elections.
