Rich Paul is a famous American sports super-agent based in Cleveland, Ohio. He started Klutch Sports Group which represents a number of prominent NBA players, including LeBron James, and other NFL players in more recent years. Forbes named him one of the world’s most powerful sports agents.

Paul graduated from high school and was mentored by Distant Replays owner Andy Hyman on selling vintage jerseys. Later he would purchase throwback jerseys from Atlanta and sell them out of his trunk in Cleveland. He met LeBron James at the Akron-Canton Airport, where James was attracted by Paul’s authentic Warren Moon throwback jersey. James and Paul exchanged contact information, and later Paul had sold James a Magic Johnson Lakers jersey and a Joe Namath Rams jersey.

Paul was born in 1981, to Rich Paul Sr. (Father, who died in 1999) and his wife. He was brought up in a one-bedroom apartment above his father’s store, R &J Confectionery. Rich Paul Career

2003-2019

Paul joined LeBron James as a part of his small inner circle. Alongside James’ childhood friends Randy Mims and Maverick Carter after the NBA draft in 2003. Later he would begin working under Leon Rose, who had negotiated James’ extension with the Cavaliers in 2006, at Creative Artists Agency. Rich alongside James left Rose and CAA to start his own agency Klutch Sports Group in 2012. He enlisted noted long-time agent and attorney Mark Termini to run the NBA contract negotiations for Klutch in 2013. From 2014 through 2019, Termini negotiated $1.4 billion in NBA contracts for Klutch Sports clients by the end of their agreement in 2020. Klutch had a roster of 25 clients and brokered over $1 billion in contracts by 2019.

United Talent Agency (UTA) asked Paul to run its sports division via a partnership with Klutch where Paul increased the division’s clients from 4 to 23, later in 2019. Rich accepted a position on UTA’s board of directors in 2020.

2020-present

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) changed its rules for agents in August 2019, requiring them to hold a bachelor’s degree. Known as the ”Rich Paul Rule” by the media. It was widely seen as a swipe at Paul for having not graduated from college. And for serving with a high school prospect Darius Bazley. Darius decided to work as an intern for New Balance rather than attend Syracuse. Rich argued in an op-ed in The Athletic that the rule would hinder people from less prestigious backgrounds, people of color. And those without the funds to attend college from working as agents in the future so NCAA executives could have more control. The association later stepped down from the rule change.

Paul released ”Klutch Conversations” during the NBS All-Star Weekend with SocialWorks and General Mills to encourage financial literacy among the youth in 2020. He was listed in the 2020 ”Ebony Power 100 List”. Paul was reportedly being sued by Nerlens Noel in August 2021, on the grounds of a breach of fiduciary duty, breach of contract, and negligence. This was for his role in turning down a $70 million contract offer from the Dallas Mavericks in the offseason preceding the 2017-18 season. On January 11, 2023, the two eventually reached a settlement. Noel paying full commissions on a $5 million deal he signed in 2020 with the New York Knicks and Noel withdrawing all legal proceedings afterward.
