Regina was the first woman in Tucson to be elected as mayor. Moreover, she was the Latino mayor to be elected since Esteva Ochoa who was the mayor from 1875 to 1876. Regina is a member of the Democrat Party.
Career
Before joining politics, she was working as the Latino outreach director for the Center of Biological Diversity. Moreover, she served as Tucson city councilwoman, having first elected to the city council in 2007.
In 2019, she announced her bid to run for the mayor of Tucson, she predicted that she will be the first Latino mayor. During the Democratic primary, she defeated state senator Steve Farley and developer Randi Dorman. After she won the primary, she faced Ed Ackerley, who was also a Democrat but running as an independent t candidate in hopes of receiving conservative votes.
