The Ultimate Fighter

After going 3-0 on the regional scene, he was invited among the 16 Light Heavyweight fighters invited to the cast of The Ultimate Fighter 23. Hawes lost his entry bout against Andrew Sanchez through unanimous decision.

World Series of Fighting/Contender Series

Hawes then signed with World Series of Fighting, debuting against Joshua Kay at WSOF 31. He won the fight through TKO in the first round. Hawes would then fight future PFL champion Louis Taylor, on short notice as a replacement for Shamil Gamzatov at WSOF 32. However, he lost the fight through guillotine submission in round 2. On August 1, 2017, he took part in Dana White’s Contender Series 4 against Julian Marquez. Hawes lost the bout by knockout following getting hit with a head kick in the second round.

Bellator MMA

Following his defeat to Marquez, Phil took two years off and moved to Thailand to train Muay Thai and competed in competitions there. He won by unanimous decision against Reza Goodray an Iranian fighter in the MAX Muay Thai Stadium on April 22, 2018. On June 14, 2019, he fought Michael Wilcox at Bellator 222, winning the fight through doctor stoppage following the first round when Wilcox was ruled unable to continue.

Hawes was invited again to receive a UFC deal on Dana White’s Contender Series 32 on September 8, 2020, after picking up three straight wins in Bellator and Brave. He faced Khadzhimurat Bestaev and won the fight and the deal through TKO in the first round. Hawes then made his UFC debut against Jacob Malkoun on October 24, 2020, at UFC 254. He completed the bout in the first exchange, knocking Malkoun unconscious in 18 seconds.

On February 20, 2021, he fought Massourdine Imavov at UFC Fight Night: Blaydes vs. Lewis. He survived a late storm by Imavov to win the fight through a majority decision. Hawes then fought Kyle Daukas at UFC on ESPN: Rodriguez vs. Waterson on May 8, 2021. He won the bout by unanimous decision. On July 17, 2021, he was scheduled to fight Deron Winn at UFC on ESPN 26. However, Deron was forced to pull out citing a separated rib and torn cartilage, and the fight was rescheduled at UFC Fight Night 194 on October 9, 2021. In turn, Winn withdrew the day prior to the event because of health issues. He was shortly expected to be replaced by Chris Curtis, but Hawes declined the fight and it was finally scrapped.

Phil then fought Chris Curtis at UFC 268, on November 6, 2021, losing the bout by KO in the first round. He was later scheduled to fight Sam Alvey replacing Ian Heinisch at UFC Fight Night 200, on February 5, 2022.
