A Playing Career

Being born in Norwich, Norfolk, he is a supporter of Norwich City. Thus he started his playing career in non-League football for Great Yarmouth Town before moving on to Diss Town with whom he won the FA Vase in 1994. After playing for Wroxham, at the age of 23, he started his professional career when he signed for Wigan Athletic before moving to Rotherham where he played over 250 games in all competitions. He then moved to Oldham where he became a firm fan favorite in his time there. He went on to help the club to the League One playoffs in the 2006/2007 seasons and eventually moved on a free transfer to Yeovil.

However, in Yeovil, he struggled to get amongst the goals regularly. After failing to agree on a new deal with Yeovil, during the summer of 2009, he joined his former club, Rotherham United on trial and impresses pre-season. Subsequently, he signed a one-year contract with the Millers and scored on his debut on an opening day against Accrington Stanley. On August 11, 2009, he scored the equalizing goal as Rotherham surprisingly beat Championship side Derby County 2-1 in the first round of the League Cup. In June 2010, he signed a one-year contract extension.

A Coaching Career

Upon his retirement from professional football, in May 2012, he joined the coaching staff at Rotherham.

He was granted a testimonial by Rotherham United in November 2012, for giving the club many years of service including as a player, coach, and joint caretaker manager. After the resignation of Kenny Jackett, Paul was appointed caretaker manager of Rotherham United on November 28, 2016. The next year on January 13, he was appointed Rotherham United manager until the end of the 2016-17 season. With Rotherham’s relegation from the Championship confirmed, Paul was appointed permanent manager of the club on April 5, 2017, on a one-year rolling contract.
