After three years playing football for the Miami Hurricanes football team at the University of Miami, Olivier Vernon made a total of 81 tackles (30 solo), including 20.5 tackles for loss, nine sacks, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble. He began to play professionally after declaring early for the 2012 NFL Draft and becoming the 72nd pick overall by the Miami Dolphins. The New York Giants signed Olivier Vernon to a five-year contract worth $85 million in 2016. While he would rather not talk about the contract that placed him on the list of top-earning NFL players, Vernon understands that with more money comes even bigger scrutiny.

Olivier Vernon started all 16 games of his first season with the Giants, recording 63 tackles with 8.5 sacks, to earn the second-team All-Pro. The following season, he scored 6.5 sacks, 22 total tackles and one interception in 12 games as the outside linebacker. Olivier Vernon Injury

Olivier Vernon was not visibly limping as he walked out of the locker room on , but he was wearing a sneaker on his right foot and a shower sandal on his left, which indicated all is not yet well with his injured left ankle. But there might be a glimmer of hope ahead. Vernon mostly stuck to company policy by referring all questions about his status to coach Pat Shurmur. But when asked what he has been doing to get back on the field, he said this:

“It’s all type of different variations of workouts, and everything seems to be helping, so they’re doing something right.”That was about it, though. He deferred to Shurmur on whether he is close to returning, whether he has been doing more in practice, whether he will travel with the team, and even about the fine for talking about any or all of the above.

Finally, Vernon was asked how this ankle injury compares to one he had last season, and he cracked a smile when he said, “You have to ask Coach Shurmur about that one. He wasn’t even here, so I don’t know how he’s going to have an answer for you.”

On January 22, 2018, the New York Giants announced their decision to hire Minnesota Vikings’ offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur as their new head coach. Shumur hired James Bettcher as defensive coordinator and changed the base 4-3 defense into a base 3-4 defense. As a result, Vernon was moved from defensive end to outside linebacker. Vernon entered training camp slated as a starting outside linebacker, but saw competition from Kareem Martin, Connor Barwin, and Lorenzo Carter.

Olivier Vernon Other Facts

Vernon is involved in charity events and usually sponsors an annual camp back at his old high school.

Olivier Vernon was the only Giants player who took to kneeling during the national anthem the entire 2017 season. However, due to NFL’s new policy that would impose fines on any player who refuses to stand during the national anthem, he ditched the cause in 2018, saying he “ain’t trying to get fined, so no.” It was a reluctant decision for him but spending the season confined in a locker room doesn’t sound appealing to the player who’s aiming for the top.

Despite earning millions as a famous athlete, Vernon craves respect in the world of football more than the money. His $85 million deal with the Giants with $52.5 million guaranteed, places him under brighter lights, thus, he continues to work towards becoming a household name in the game.
