Who is Nicholas Castellanos?

Nicholas Castellanos is an American professional baseball player. Currently, he is playing for the Cincinnati Reds as a right fielder. Prior to joining Cincinnati Red, he was playing for the Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs.

Nicholas was drafted in 2010, while he was still in high school by Detroit Tigers. In addition, he appeared in the 2012 All-Star Future Game where he was named as the Most Valuable Player of the Contest. Moreover, he made his debut on September 1st, 2013. After 9 years of playing with the Tigers, he was then traded to Chicago Cubs on July 31st, 2019. After that, he signed a deal with Cincinnati Reds before the 2020 season.

Career

Minor Leagues

Nicholas began his career in 2010 after he was picked with the 44th pick in the 2010 major league baseball draft. In addition, he has also named the third-best power-hitting prospect and fourteenth-best overall prospect by Baseball America before his draft.

Nicholas slipped due to his commitment to the University of Miami. He then went ahead and sealed a deal with the Tigers where he received $3.45 million as a signing bonus. In addition, this was the largest bonus ever given to a player selected after the first round at the time. While he was still in high school he played shortstop,  however, after he was drafted by the Tigers he was shifted to third base as a professional.

Baseball America ranked Castellanos as the 65th-best prospect in baseball prior to the 2011 season. Moreover, Nicholas was also a member of the Class-A Midwest League’s West Michigan Whitecaps. In addition, Castellanos batted.312 with seven home runs and 76 RBIs for the Whitecaps, leading the Midwest League with 158 hits. He was voted as the Tigers’ minor league position player of the year.

As time went by he continued to improve his capability as a player. Prior to the 2012 season, he was ranked as the second-best prospect in the organization. In addition, he was also ranked as the 45th best in baseball. He started his 2012 season with Class-A Lakeland. Moreover, in May 2012 he was named as Tigers’ minor league of the month. This was after he battled. 402 with 32 RBIs in 55 games for Lakeland. After that, he was elevated to Erie on June 4th.

Nicholas attended the American Heritage School in Plantation, Florida, where he played for the school’s baseball team. Playing for Detroit Tigers

2013 to 2016

After the major league roster was expanded on September 1,  2013, he was one of the players who were elevated to the Tigers. In addition, he also made his major league debut on the same day playing on the left field.

Castellanos made his first major league start on September 7. In addition, he also recorded his first major league hit, an infield single off Danny Duffy. However, since the Tigers were in a pennant race and manager Jim Leyland chose to employ guys with greater major league experience, he saw limited playing time.

Moreover, Tiger decided to trade Prince Fielder after the 2013 season. As a result of this trade, the general manager Dave Dombrowski said that they would move Miguel Cabrera to first base and Nicholas be their starting third baseman for 2014. On April 9, 2014, Castellanos hit his first MLB home run off the top of the wall in dead center field against Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Josh Beckett at Dodger Stadium.

Moreover, on July 22, 2015, he hit his first career grand slam off Mike Montgomery of the Seattle Mariners. In addition, through the All-Star break of the 2016 season, he was hitting.302 with 17 home runs and 51 RBIs. This was still when he was playing as the Tigers’ starting third baseman.

On August 6th, he fractured his fifth metacarpal bone on the left hand. Due to the injury, he was placed on a 15-day disabled list.  Nicholas returned to the field in the last week of the regular season.

2017 to 2019

On January 13, 2017, the Detroit Tigers, avoided arbitration with Nicholas and sealed a deal worth $ 3 million.

On July 18, Castellanos became the fourth Tigers player since 1913 to hit a single, triple, and two home runs in a game against the Kansas City Royals. In addition, he also became the first Tigers player to accomplish so since Dmitri Young in 2003.

With the July trades of third baseman Jeimer Candelario and right fielder J. D. Martinez. Nicholas was shifted and started playing games in the right field from early September through the end of the 2017 season.

On January 11, 2019, the Tigers avoided arbitration with Nicholas and sealed a one-year deal worth $9.95 million.

Chicago Cubs

The Tigers traded Castellanos along with money considerations to the Chicago Cubs on July 31, 2019. Moreover, Nicholas was traded in exchange for Alex Lange and Paul Richan. Castellanos hit.348 in August, with 11 home runs, 20 RBIs, and 9 doubles, as well as a.385 on-base percentage and a.713 slugging percentage.

Cincinnati Reds

On January 27th, 2020, he signed a 4-year contract worth $64 million with the Cincinnati Reds. In 2020, the season was shortened by the Covid-19 pandemic. During the 2020  season, he only hit .225, with 14 home runs and 34 RBI in 60 games. Moreover, during his time at the Reds, he became famous on the internet for his oddly-timed home runs.
