Who is Mona Brown-Heath?

Mona Brown-Heath ( Mona Heath) is an American visual artist who is known for being the wife of American jazz saxophonist, composer, and arranger, Jimmy Heath.

Brown and Heath had been married since 1960 until Jimmy’s death on 19th January 2020 in Loganville, Georgia of natural causes. Heath was the 2003 NEA Jazz Master who came of age in the bebop era and did much to sway the course of jazz history in the ensuing decades.

Brown met his future husband, Jimmy Heath in May 1959 at a coming-home party the night after his release from prison. This was after serving most of a six-year prison sentence in Lewisburg after being convicted for the sale of heroin.

The couple got married the next year. Being white, Brown’s parents refused to attend the couple’s wedding and after the marriage, they stopped speaking to her. Eventually, the couple moved to the apartment in Corona, Queens, where they would live for more than 50 years.

Brown and Jimmy have two children together, a son, Jeffrey, and a daughter, Roslyn. She is a step-mother to James Mtume, Heath’s son from his first marriage. Mtume is also a percussionist, vocalist, and songwriter with whom Heath occasionally collaborated with.

Jimmy Heath’s Death

Mona confirmed the death of her husband Jimmy Heath to WGBO, a public radio station in Newark. Heath died on January 19th, 2020 in Loganville, Ga and the cause of his death being natural causes.

Heath was 93 years old at the time of his death.

Heath’s compositions became part of the midcentury jazz canon, and also found new prominence in middle age as a co-leader of a band with his two brothers.

Heath is survived by his wife, Mona, his three children, his brother Albert “Tootie” Heath; and by his nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
