 Who is Mino Raiola?

Carmine ”Mino” Raiola was a famous Italian football agent recognized for having represented players including Pavel Nedved, Paul Pogba, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Raiola started his career in 1992 in the Netherlands, where he had lived since childhood, assisting transfer Dutch players to Italy’s Serie A. Following beginning his own agency, he became a renowned super-agent who was involved with numerous of the most high-profile and expensive transfers of the new millennium. He developed popularity among players as an agent who achieved the best of his clients, while many owners and managers considered him untrustworthy as a controversial figure.

Following a short venture as a player and administrator, Mino stayed involved in the football world as a football agent. He started working at Sports Promotions, a sports agent company and helped in the transfers of several high-profile Dutch players to Italian clubs. The players included Ajax player Bryan Roy (in 1992 to Foggia), Wim Jonk and Dennis Bergkamp (both in 1993 to Internazionale), Marciano Vink (in 1993 to Genoa), and Michael Kreek (in 1994 to Padua). Roy and Kreek both praised Raiola for his ability to assist them to settle and taking the time to assist with everyday aspects of their lives such as opening bank accounts, buying cars and accommodation while speaking to British broadcaster Sky Sports in 2021. Raiola met his wife and encountered the club’s manager Zdenek Zeman, who he instantly became friends with while staying with Roy in Foggia.

Following falling out with Rob Jansen, who had founded Sports Promotions and had been his boss, Mino opted to leave the company and begin his own business. His main independent transfer was Pavel Nedved’s signing from Sparta Prague for Lazio after his impressive performance at UEFA Euro 1996. Raiola sold the template of Nedved, an ”extemist” who ”can train harder than you can imagine”, to various players throughout his career. In 2001, he instigated Nedved’s transfer to Juventus, where he won the Ballon d’Or in 2003. Later he saw several of Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s transfers that led him to be cumulatively the second most expensive footballer in history by 2016.

2016 to 2022

Mino was involved in two disciplinary hearings instigated by the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC) for transfer irregularities as part of a wider investigation of professional football by Italian authorities in 2008. In the world record transfer of Paul Pogba to Manchester United, he made a reported €25 million from Pogba’s €105 million transfer in August 2016. He subsequently bought the former Miami home of one of America’s most famous mob bosses, Al Capone for €9 million. The Italian Football Federation later banned Raiola from acting as an agent representative for three months for undisclosed reasons on May 8, 2019, while his cousin Vincenzo Raiola was banned for two months. Following the FIFA Disciplinary Committee absorbing the Italian federation’s decisions, the bans were extended worldwide on May 10. Raiola and his cousin appealed the original ban to the Federation court of Appeal in Italy and won, leading to a revoking of the three-month ban on June 13.

Mino, together with fellow agents Jorge Mendes, Roger Wittman, and Jonathan Barnett, founded ”The Football Forum”, in 2019. This was an international movement of players and agents to assist create a new football system as opposed to FIFA. He, together with Barnett and Mendes among others, threatened FIFA with legal sanctions after the planned cap on transfer payments, on January 22, 2020. In a 2021 interview with The Athletic, Raiola detailed his feelings toward FIFA stemmed from the many scandals and allegations of corruption.
