He began his journalism career at the University of Maryland. To pay his way through college, he worked as a news aide for The Washington Post, and as a production assistant for WTTG-TV in Washington, D.C. Dunston served as a Reporter/Multimedia Journalist at WHIO-TV, Dayton, OH from 1994 to 1997. He was also a Reporter/Fill-in Anchor for WUSA-TV, Washington, DC from 1997 to 2000.
