Who Is Michael Hancock?

Michael Hancock is an American politician currently serving as the 45th  mayor of Denver Colorado. Apart from being a politician, he is also a known author and a Businessman. In addition, he is a member of the Democratic Party. Moreover, prior to being elected as the mayor, he has served two terms a the Denver City Councillor from the 11th district. 

While he was serving as the Denver City Council, he served two terms as the body’s president. Moreover, his last term ended on July 18, 2011. After winning the mayoral position, he was sworn in as the mayor on July 18, 2011. In the general election, he was competing with Chris Romer in a run-off election on June 7th, 2011.

He was easily reelected to a third term in 2019. In addition, he’s Denver’s second African American to be elected as Mayor in the history of Denver after mayor  Wellington Webb.

Career

He began his career in the 1990s, where he was working two jobs at a time. He was working at the Denver Housing Authority and the National Civic League. In addition, at the same time, he was also pursuing a master’s degree.

While working at the Denver Housing he was designing, implementing, and supervising the first-ever athletic, cultural and leadership-training programs. Moreover, he also assisted in drafting a state law outlawing drug possession within 100 feet of public housing

On the other hand, at National Civic League, he assisted communities, nonprofits, and other clients all over the country craft and enact strategic plans to solve economic and budget challenges.

In 1995, he joined the Metro Denver’s Urban League as program director. Moreover, at that time the economic-empowerment was and civil right was struggling so much that his first paycheck didn’t go through.

Denver City Council

Upon serving as President of Metro for five years, he left in the company in 2003. This was after he was elected as Denver’s 11th district City Council. He was again reelected in 2007. After being elected for the second term his colleagues overwhelmingly elected him to serve as the body president of the Denver City Council. He served on that seat for two years from 2006 to 2008.

In addition, he presided over the creation of the Denver Pre-school Initiative, strategies to fight foreclosure, as well as the implementation of the largest infrastructure improvement in Denver history.

Because he had won statewide office as Colorado Attorney General in 1998 and 2002, and as a U.S. Senator in 2004, it was reported that then-U.S. Secretary of the Interior and former U.S. Senator Ken Salazar would run. Salazar, however, declared on January 7 that he would not run for governor, endorsing two-term Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper.

After five years the incumbent Mayor for Denver John Hickenlooper announced his candidacy. After John announcing his candidacy, Michael went ahead and announced his intention to run for the position. During the primary, Hancock was among the two top finishers. Since no one got the majority vote they went for a runoff which was scheduled on June 7th, 2011. Moreover, in the runoff, he defeated his competitor Romer with 58.08% of the vote cast.

He went on and won the general election and he was sworn in on July 18th, 2011 as the 45th Mayor of Denver City. After serving for the first term, he was easily elected for the second term in 2015 garnering 80.16 % of the vote cast. On the May 5th, 2015 election, he was facing Marcus Giavanni, who emerged in second place with 8.50% of the votes.

The Ellie Caulkins Opera House hosted Hancock’s inauguration on July 20, 2015. In May 2018, it was announced that entrepreneur Kayvan Khalatbari had outraised Hancock in the first reporting quarter of the year for his impending reelection attempt.

Despite this, Hancock was re-elected in June 2019 with 56.3% of the vote in a runoff election following the general election in May 2019, in which Hancock and Jamie Giellis were the top two finishers. In the runoff on June 4, Giellis earned 43.7% of the vote.
