Melissa Harris-Perry formerly known as Melissa Victoria Harris-Lacewell is an American writer, professor, television host, and political commentator. She has a focus on African-American politics. From 2012 to February 27, 2016, she hosted the Melissa Harris-Perry weekend news and opinion television show on MSNBC.

She attended Wake Forest University from where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English. She also earned a Ph.D. in political science from Duke University. Harris-Perry received an honorary doctorate from Meadville Lombard Theological School. She is studying for a Master of Divinity in theology at Union Theological Seminary of Columbia University.

Her show was still scheduled to air as usual on Saturday but she chose not to return. Harris-Perry said she would only return when she could do “substantive, meaningful and autonomous work.” Her public dispute with NBC led to discussions between the network and her representatives about ending her relationship with MSNBC. NBC confirmed on February 28, 2016 that she was leaving the network.
