Maxwell Frost Career

Early career

Maxwell has been organizing since around 2012 when he was active in Barack Obama‘s 2012 presidential campaign. He volunteered with the Newtown Action Alliance, an organization formed in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting. Frost has identified Occupy Wall Street, the Columbine High School massacre, the killing of Trayvon Martin, and the Orlando nightclub shooting as events that influenced his thinking. He then worked for Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Margaret Good. He was formerly a pro-Palestine activist and held pro-Palestinian beliefs prior to reversing his foreign policy position in 2022.

In 2016, he survived an incident of gun violence at a Halloween event in Downtown Orlando. He was an organizer with the American Civil Liberties Union and served to support Florida’s 2018 Amendment 4 and to pressure Joe Biden to halt supporting the Hyde Amendment in 2019. Maxwell was the national organizing director for March for Our Lives. He was then arrested at a voting rights rally in Lafayette Square led by William Barber II and Ben Jealous in November 2021.

U.S. House of Representatives (2023-)

He revealed his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for Florida’s 10th congressional district in August 2021. In the main campaign, Frost launched a television ad in Spanglish, telling The Hill, ”Latinos are in a place where their first language is Spanish but they speak English as well, and quite frankly that’s me… We speak Spanglish in the house, and I know that’s the same for a lot of Latino families in the district.”

He defeated Florida Senator Randolph Bracy and former U.S. representatives Corrine Brown and Alan Grayson, among others in the August 23, 2022, primary. Because of the district’s Democratic shift, he was expected to win the general election in November. If he is elected he would be the youngest member of Congress, the first Generation Z member of Congress, and the first Afro-Cuban member of Congress. Frost was endorsed by many national and local political figures such as former NAACP President Ben Jealous, Jesse Jackson, civil rights activist Dolores Huerta, and U.S. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. Frost has criticized the Palestinian Authority’s martyr’s fund that compensates the families of dead and wounded militants, likening it to a recruitment tactic of Hamas for the purpose of committing politically motivated violence against Israel. He strongly opposes the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, and accuses it of harboring leadership from terrorist organizations. Pro-Palestine position reversal controversy

The Jewish news website Jewish Insider published a candidate questionnaire from his congressional campaign that marked a sudden reversal in his foreign policy positions on Israel and Palestine in early August 2022. He had formerly taken part in pro-Palestine activism, but in the questionnaire, he distanced himself from the past while declaring an aggressive stance against the BDS movement. Progressive groups have since lambasted him for ”abandoning Palestine on his way to the Democratic primary win”. While his former pro-Palestine activist colleagues have accused him of deceitfully using pro-Palestine ”organizing success as a stepping stool to become anti-Palestinian” and engaging in a bait-and-switch as the vote by mail ballots for the main election had already been cast prior to his shift in policy positions.
