Matthew James Chapman (Matt Chapman) is a famous American professional baseball third baseman for the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball (MLB). Previously, he played for the Oakland Athletics and made his MLB breakout in 2017. He won the Platinum Glove Award, Fielding Bible Award, and Gold Glove Award in both 2018 and 2019. Amateur career

Matt studied at El Toro High School in Lake Forest, California. He had a .422 batting average as a senior in 2011. Undrafted out of high school in the 2011 MLB draft, Chapman joined California State University, Fullerton, playing college baseball for the Cal State Fullerton Titans.

He slashed .312/.412/.498 with six home runs and 48 RBIs in 54 games in his junior year in 2014. Chapman was picked by the Oakland Athletics in the first round of the 2014 MLB draft following the season.

Professional career

Minor leagues

Following the signing, Matt made his professional breakout with the Rookie-level Arizona League Athletics. He was then promoted to the Class-A Beloit Snappers following three games. Chapman batted .237 with five home runs and 20 RBIs in 50 games for Beloit. Also, he played in one game for the Double-A Midland RockHounds at the conclusion of the season. His whole 2015 season was spent with the Class A-Advanced Stockon Ports where he batted .250 with 23 home runs and 57 RBIs in 80 games.

Matt was later in 2016, invited to major league spring training with the Athletics. He started the season with Midland and slashed .244/.335/.521 with 29 home runs and 83 RBIs in 117 games. After this he was promoted to the Triple-A Nashville Sounds in August, finishing the season batting .197 with 7 home runs and 13 RBIs in 18 games. He was chosen as the Texas League Player of the Year for 2016. Chapman began the 2017 season playing for Nashville. He then suffered a wrist injury on a check swing in the first series of the season and spent two weeks on the injury list. Chapman batted .257 with 16 home runs and 30 RBIs in 49 games for Nashville.

Oakland Athletics

On June 15, 2017, the Athletics promoted Chapman to the major league, to make his debut that night. The next day he had his first major league hit and collected 3 RBIs (consisting of the go-ahead run) over the New York Yankees. He was then thrown out of a game by umpire Mike Everitt for arguing with Los Angeles Angels catcher Juan Graterol on September 6. Matt took exception to Graterol looking at the Oakland batters, and Graterol felt that the opponents were trying to steal signs. Chapman spent the remainder of the season with Oakland following his June 15 call-up, batting .234 with 14 home runs and 40 RBIs in 84 games.

On June 16, 2018, Matt was placed on the disabled list, with a bruised right thumb and was later activated on July 3. He completed the 2018 campaign batting .278 with 24 home runs and 68 RBIs, giving solid baserunning and amazing defense as well. On October 16, Chapman underwent ulnar-sided sesamoid bone excision surgery on the thumb in Los Angeles. He earned a Fielding Bible Award on October 29. 2019-2021

Matt excelled offensively, hitting 36 home runs with 91 RBIs in 2019, despite hitting .249/.342/.506 in 156 games as he struck out 147 times in 583 at-bats. He opted out of the remaining part of the season because of hip tendinitis, requiring surgery on September 12, 2020. Chapman batted .232/.276/.535 with 10 home runs and 25 RBIs as he struck out 54 times in 142 at-bats in 2020. Because of hip tendonitis, he played last on September 6, and underwent labrum surgery that month, concluding his season.

He batted .210/.314/.403 with 27 home runs and 72 RBI s in 151 games n 2021. Chapman became the first Athletic to ever strike out 200 times in a season and had the lowest line drive percentage of any major league, at 14%. Additionally, he took more pitches per plate appearance than any other MLB batter, at 4.29. Matt earned his third career Gold Glove Award.
