Campbell landed his first coaching career at Bowling Green State University in 2003 as a graduate assistant. He served under Gregg Brandon as the head coach until the end of the 2004 season. Scott Pioli offered Campbell a job at England Patriots but he declined the offer. Mount Union hired Campbell in 2005 as an offensive coordinator.

The team won the Division III championship in the 2005 and 2006 seasons consecutively. Campbell returned to Bowling Green in the 2007 season as an offensive line coach. In the 2008 season, Campbell served both as an offensive line coach and run game coordinator.

Toledo University

At the end of the 2008 season, Campbell secured a job at the University of Toledo and served in the 2009 season as the running game coach under head coach Tim Beckman. Between the 2010 and 2011 seasons, Campbell served as an offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.

Campbell landed his first-ever head coach position in the 2012 season at Toledo after Beckman’s departure to the University of Illinois.
