Mary Kay Letourneau was a former Seattle elementary school teacher who came into the limelight after being sexually involved with her 12-year old sixth-grade student, Vili Fualaau. She famously served her time in prison after pleading guilty in 1997 to two counts of felony second-degree rape of a child.

Her case became a national scandal. She even gave birth to her child with Fualaau while awaiting her sentencing. The state sought a six-and-a-half-year prison sentence but she reached a plea agreement calling for six months in jail, with three months suspended, and no contact with Fualaau for life among other terms.

After serving her three months in jail, Letourneau was released and despite their no-contact order, the two were caught by police in a car. After the incident, the judge revoked the plea agreement and her prison sentence was reinstated. She had to serve the maximum allowed by law of seven-and-a-half years.

Letourneau was imprisoned from 1998 to 2004. After her release, the two got married in May 2015.

Mary Katherine Schmitz was born the fourth child of seven to Mary E. (née Suehr), a former chemist, and John G. Schmitz, a community college instructor. Better known as Mary Kay to her family, and called “Cake” by her father, she was raised in a “strict Catholic household.”

Her father began a political career when she was two years old successfully running for a Republican seat in the state legislature. He also held positions as a California state senator and U.S. Congressman. In 1982, it was revealed that his father had two other children out of wedlock having had an affair with a mistress. His mistress was a former student at Santa Ana College, where he had taught political science. Mary Kay’s father’s affair made her parents separate but later reconciled. Her father died in 2001.

Letourneau was arrested and the then-34-year-old teacher pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree child rape. First spending three months in jail and later serving over the other seven years after them defying the no-contact order. After Letourneau’s release on August 4, 2004, and reversal of their no-contact order, the two got married on May 20, 2005. Their wedding was a big one having over 250 guests in attendance. Their wedding took place at a winery in Washington.

After 12 years of marriage, Fualaau filed for separation from Letourneau on May 9, 2017. He later withdrew the filing. They finally divorced in August 2019.
