Who is Marjorie Taylor Greene?

Marjorie Taylor Greene is an American politician and conspiracy theorist serving as Georgia’s 14th congressional district  U.S Representative. Greene was elected to congress in the elections that took place in November 2020. She occupied office on 3rd January 2021.

Greene was actually one of the 139 representatives who went against the 2020 US presidential elections in congress on 7th January 2021 a day after storming the Capitol. She founded, developed and later sold one of the top Crossfit gyms in the United States.

Political Career

Greene started her candidacy in 2020 for the 6th congressional district. However, she turned her campaign to the 14th district after incumbent TomGraves made an announcement claiming that he would be seeking reelection. Actually, shortly before the primary elections, Facebook removed Greene’s video due to violation of terms of service. She held an AR-15 rifle while she warned Antifa terrorists to stay away from Northwest Georgia in the video. Despite finishing in the first place, Greene proceeded to a runoff against Jon Cowan. She won the election and therefore became the nominee on August 11.

Greene was considered to be the most likely candidate to win the elections considering the 14th district was dominated by Republicans. In addition, with a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R+27, the 14th district is the 10th most republic district in the nation. Trump tweeted in support of Greene on the day before her runoff describing her as a Republican future star and a real winner. After Democratic Party, IT specialist Kevin Van Ausdal withdrew from the race, Greene ran unopposed for the general elections. In fact, since the creation of the 14th district in 2012, no democrat has won above 30% of the votes.

Greene won with 74% during the general elections while Ausdal got 25% as his name remained on the ballot. She, therefore, became the 2nd woman to represent Georgia in the House. Karen Handel was the first where she represented the 6th in a special election in 2017 but lost for a full term. So, Greene was the first woman from Georgia to be elected for a full term.

During her Tenure

In fact, Greene wore a face mask reading “Trump Won” on her first day in office. She also objected to counting Michigan’s electors during the counting of electoral votes but was decided to be invalid after the members of the United States Senate refused to sign off.

Conspiracy Theories

Greene stood behind conspiracy theory on the far-right QAnon. She posted a video on her Facebook that the theories were worth considering. In addition, she authored 57 articles for American Truth Seekers which is a conspiracy theory website. Actually, one of the theories connected the democratic party with child sex, the occult and satanism. However, she denied connections to the conspiracy theory when she stood in the House of Representatives in 2020. She also rejected the title of Qanon candidate.

In 2017, she posted a video on Facebook expressing her doubt that the suspect of the 2017 Las Vegas shooting acted on his own. Greene also called George Soros who is a Jewish businessman and Holocaust survivor, a member of the Nazi. She then claimed that the 2018 mid-term election was an Islamic invasion to our government in which Ihan Omar and Rashida Tlaib were elected to the Congress. Also in 2018, Greene supported a conspiracy theory that claimed that a plane did not in fact hit the pentagon during the 11th September attacks but however later admitted on Twitter that they were incorrect.

Political Position

In addition, she also assisted the defunding of planned parenthood. In 2020, Greene took part in a Pro-second Amendment rally in Ringgold, Georgia where she claimed that she would always protect the rights of gun owners. Actually, on her 2020 campaign, she offered an AR-15 style rifle which she was giving away. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she wrote on Twitter that children should not wear masks. This was against recommendations from disease control and prevention control centres and public health professionals.

She considered the restrictions placed in response to the pandemic including wearing of face masks as a way imposing Democrats’ tyrannical control.
