An Amateur Career
He began his junior career in the QMJHL League with the Val d’Or Foreurs. Shortly after returning from the 2010 World Junior Championships tournament, he was suspended for 15 games by the QMJHL because of elbowing Alexandre Durette in the head of the Rimouski Oceanic.
A Professional Career
A Career with the Minnesota Wild
On November 12, 2010, he made his NHL debut for Minnesota in a game against the Florida Panthers. He scored his first NHL career goal during the first game of the 20111-12 season against Steve Mason of the Columbus Blue Jackets. His breakout year came in the 2013-14 season skating in 76 games with the Wild and playing the majority of his minutes on the second defensive pairing with Jared Spurgeon. In this season, he scored three goals and added 14 assists for 17 points.
Entering the 2014-15 season, he had high expectations. Immediately he entered the season and made an impact going on a scoring streak and surpassing his career totals of goals scored. On November 14 and November 29, he scored the overtime winners against the Winnipeg Jets and Dallas Stars respectively. On the latter date, he signed a five-year $20 million contract extension with the Wild. Later on December 1, he was fined $2,755.38 for an illegal check to the head of the St. Louis Blues’ T.J. Oshie. Nine days later, he has suspended a further two games for the same infraction against the New York Islanders Brock Nelson.
A Career with the Buffalo Sabres
After spending seven seasons with Minnesota, he alongside Jason Pominville and a 2018 fourth-round pick was traded on June 30, 2017, to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for Marcus Foligno, Tyler Ennis, and a third-round pick.
A Career with the Montreal Canadiens
