Marcel Ruiz Pérez is a Puerto Rican-American actor best known for his roles as Alex Alvarez in the Netflix series One Day at a Time and John Smith in the 2019 film Breakthrough.

Ruiz began appearing in commercials at an early age. He moved to Los Angeles at the age of nine and made his debut into his acting career. Ruiz starred in the Netflix’s reboot of One Day at a Time as the character Alex Alvarez from 2017 to 2019.

His character in the film, Alvarez mirrors his own laid-back and funny personality, but then takes the second season to another level tackling topics like racism, popularity and bullying.

He enjoys filming and editing content for his YouTube channel, writing music, photography and fashion, and excels in athletics including basketball and soccer. He has a determined and philanthropic spirit which driven him to give back to his home island after Hurricane Maria through the campaign Voices for Puerto Rico.

Ruiz also gust-starred in FX’s ‘Snowfall’ in 2017. Marcel was a nominee for TV Actor: Comedy category at the 2019 teen Choice Awards.

Ruiz was born to award-Winning directors, Carlitos Ruiz Ruiz and Mariem Pérez Riera. His maternal grandfather, Silverio Pérez is also a notable television host and comedian. His maternal grandmother Roxana Riera is a singer and painter. He has a sister Lucia Ruiz.

Marcel stars as Alejandro “Alex” Alberto Alvarez Riera Calderon Leyte-Vidal Inclán in the comedy web television series One Day at a Time. He stars alongside Justina Machado, Todd Grinnell, Isabella Gomez, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rita Moreno.

Alex is the son of Penelope (Machado) who wants to gain popularity at school and is part of the baseball team. Alex starts a school project about Cuba. In season two of the series, he begins working during the summer at Dr. Berkowitz’s office.

The series received multiple awards and nominations, including 3 Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Multi-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series (Pat Barnett). It was then nominated for a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comedy Series.

Ruiz stars in the 2019 American Christian drama film Breakthrough. He stars alongside: Chrissy Metz, Josh Lucas, Topher Grace, Mike Colter, Sam Trammel, and Dennis Haysbert with a cameo by contemporary Christian music artist Phil Wickham and Christian rapper Lecrae. The film is directed by Roxann Dawson and written by Grant Nieporte, based on the Christian book The Impossible, an account of true events written by Joyce Smith with Ginger Kolbaba.

Ruiz plays the character of John Smith who is Joyce (Metz) and Brian’s (Lucas) Guatemalan 14-year-old adoptive son who makes a miraculous recovery.
