Who is Mac Miller?

Malcolm James McCormick professionally known as Mac Miller was a prominent American rapper and record producer. He began his career at the age of fifteen in Pittsburgh’s hip-hop scene in 2007. He then signed a record deal with independent label Rostrum Records in 2010, and also released his breakthrough mixtapes K.I.D.S. (2010) and Best Day Ever (2011). His debut album Blue Slide Park (2011) became the first independently distributed debut album to top the US Billboard 200 since 1995.


Miller founded and recorded the label imprint REMember Music in 2013. After his second studio album entitled Watching Movies with the Sound Off (2013) left Rostrum and signed with Warner Bros. Records in 2014. With the newly signed label, he released four studio albums: GO: OD AM (2015), The Divine Feminine (2016), Swimming (2018), and the posthumous Circles (2020). For the album Swimming, he was posthumously nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. Moreover, he also served as a record producer for himself under the pseudonym Larry Fisherman and other various artists.
During his life, he struggled with addiction and substance abuse which was often referred to in his lyrics. He died on September 7, 2018, from an accidental drug overdose of cocaine, fentanyl, and alcohol at his home. He died at the age of 26.

A Career from 1992 to 2010

By the age of six Miller, was a self-taught musician, playing guitar, piano, drums, and bass. And started rapping at the age of 14. Before starting rapping, he wanted to be a singer. He decided to focus on his rap career in high school and later noted “Once I hit 15, I got real serious about it and it changed my life completely… Originally he went by the name Easy Mac (often stylized as EZ Mac). And at the age of 15 released the mixtape But My Mackin’ Ain’t Easy in 2007. By 2009, he established himself as Mac Miller and released two mixtapes: The Jukebox: Prelude to Class Clown and The High Life. He won 21 & Under of the Year, and Best Hip Hop Video for “Live Free” at the 2010 Pittsburgh Hip Hop Awards.

A Career from 2010 to 2013

In July 2010, he signed with the independent label Rostrum Records. Benjy Grinberg (president of Rostrum) met Miller while recording with Wiz Khalifa at ID Labs. His mixtape K.I.D.S. was released in August 2010 by Rostrum. He was featured by XXL in their annual “Freshman Class” list of 2011, along with other rappers including Kendrick Lamar and Meek Mill. In March 2011, he released his fifth mixtape Best Day Ever. The mixtape’s single “Donald Trump” became his first song to chart on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at No. 75, and received a platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

He also released a six-track EP, On and On and Beyond in March 2011. The EP became his first entry into the US Billboard 200 albums chart at No. 55. On November 8, 2011, he released his debut studio album entitled Blue Slide Park. The album debuted atop the Billboard 200 with its 144,000 first-week sales. Three songs from the album, “Smile Back”, “Frick Park Market”, and “Party on Fifth Ave. peaked at No. 55, 60, and 64 respectively on the Billboard Hot 100. His debut album was certified gold in the United States and Canada. He went on and released his seventh mixtape, Macadelic on March 23, 2012. The mixtape’s single “Loud” peaked at No. 53 on the Billboard Hot 100.

On November 21, 2012, he released an EP, You, under the alias Larry Lovestein & The Velvet Revival. Rather than rap, the EP features Mac crooning over lounging jazz instrumentals. Miller in early 2013, founded the record label imprint REMember Music, named after a deceased friend. He starred in a six-episode reality series, Mac Miller and the Most Dope Family on MTV2. Again he released another mixtape Run-On Sentences Vol. 1 on March 4, 2013. Later that month he featured on Ariana Grande’s lead single “The Way” for her debut album Yours Truly. The song became Miller’s highest peak as it charted at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified triple platinum by the RIAA. On June 18, 2013, his second studio album entitled Watching Movies with the Sound Off was released.

The album sold 102,000 copies in its first week and debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. The album generated three singles; “S.D.S., Watching Movies”, and “Goosebumps”. The album featured guest appearances from Ab-Soul, Action Bronson, Earl Sweatshirt, Jay Electronica, Schoolboy Q, and Tyler, the Creator. On September 20, 2013, Pittsburgh mayor Luke Ravenstahl presented Miller with a key to the city, and declared the date “Mac Miller Day”. He also produced another mixtape Stolen Youth in collaboration with Vince Staples. On October 31, 2013, he released an eponymous mixtape, Delusional Thomas. And on December 17, 2013, released the live album Live from Space. The live album contained nine songs performed with the band The Internet during his Space Migration Tour and five studio-recorded tracks that were cut from his second album.

A Career from 2014 to 2018

When his contract with Rostrum Records expired in January 2014, he parted ways with the label. He then independently released his tenth solo mixtape Faces on May 11, 2014. In mid-2014, the second season of his reality series Mac Miller and the Most Dope Family aired on MTV2. Miller signed a recording deal contract and distribution deal for REMember Music with Warner Bros. Records in October 2014. His major-label debut album entitled GO: OD AM was released on September 18, 2015. The album charted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 with 87,000 album-equivalent units.

The album’s single “Weekend” featuring singer Miguel, was certified gold and platinum by the RIAA respectively. Immediately after completing GO: OD AM, he began work on his next studio album wanting to explore the emotion of love. On September 16, 2016, his fourth studio album The Divine Feminine was released. The album features Miller singing nearly as much as rapping, and incorporates genres such as funk, jazz, and R&B.
