Who is Lindsey Graham?

Lindsey Graham is an American politician who serves as South Carolina’s senior United States Senator since 2003. Since 2019, Graham has served on the Judiciary as chairman of the Senate Committee. He is also a member of the Republican party.

Graham is a native of Central, South Carolina. From 1982 to 1988, he served in the United States Airforce with the Judge Advocate General’s Corps as a defence attorney. He also served with Air Force’s prosecutor in Europe who was based in Western Germany. In 2014, he received a Bronze Star Medal as a merit for his service. Before serving his term in the South Carolina House of Representatives, Graham was a lawyer. He completed four terms as House Representative of the 3rd congressional district of South Carolina from 1995 to 2003.

Career

Military Service

After graduating from law school, Graham was commissioned as an officer in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps in 1982. This marked the beginning of Graham’s active duty in the United States Air Force. He started his duty as the Air Force defence attorney and was then transferred to Rhein-Main Air Base in Frankfurt in Germany. He then became the Air Force’s chief prosecutor where he served in the position from 1984 to 1988. On the end of his service in Europe, he went back to South Carolina and left active duty 1989 and started a private practice as a lawyer. Graham then joined South Carolina Air National Guard in 1989 and later went to the U.S Air Force Reserve in 1995.

Graham was later recalled to active duty during the 1990-1991 Gulf War to serve as a judge advocate in Eastover, South Carolina at McEntire Air National Guard Station. This was also the time where he helped brief departing pilots on the law of war. Graham then received a promotion to lieutenant colonel in 1998 and then a promotion to colonel in 2004. Later in 2007, Graham served in Iraq on active duty as a reservist as well as in Afghanistan during the Senate recess in 2019. Graham retired in 2015 from the Air Force after reaching the statutory age of retirement of 60 years for his rank with over 33 years of service.

House of Representatives

Graham joined the South Carolina House of Representatives from the 2nd district in the Oconee County where he served for a single from 1993 to 1995. After Democrat U.S Congressman Butler Derrick for the 3rd congressional district retired, Graham ran to take his place. He won the primary elections for the Republican party with 52%  of the vote. Graham then went on to win the general elections defeating Democrat State Senator James Bryan. He became the first Republican to represent his district since 1877. He was then re-elected for his second term in 1996 as well as in 1998 for his third term. Also in 2000, he got elected to a fourth term winning against Democrat George Brightharp with 68%.

U.S Senate

On the retirement of Republican U.S Senator Strom Thurmond, Graham ran to replace him. He ran for the Republican primary unopposed and in the general elections, he won by 600,010 votes which were 54% defeating Alex Sanders who was the former Chief Judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeal. He, therefore, became the first new U.S Senator from South Carolina since 1965. Serving alongside Ernest Hollings, Graham was the state’s junior senator for two years. Graham ran for a second term in 2008 against Buddy Witherspoon who was the National Executive Committeeman of South Carolina Republican Party in the primary elections. Graham won the general elections defeating Democrat Bob Conley with 57% of the votes.

Republican primary elections were held on June 10, 2014, and Graham won with 58% of the votes. He then won the general elections with 54% of the votes against 39% of Democratic senator Brad Hutto. Later in 2020, Graham ran for reelection against a challenging opponent, Democrat Jaime Harrison. Graham won the November 3, 2020, general election with 54.4%.
