Who is Linda Tripp?

Linda Tripp (born: Linda Rose Carotenuto) was an American former civil servant and small business owner. She is best known for turning over secretly-recorded conversations with Lewinsky to Ken Starr leading to the impeachment of President Bill Clinton in 1998.

She was a civil servant in the Pentagon when she became close to the then-22-year-old Lewinsky, who also worked in the public affairs office. During their conversations, Lewinsky revealed that she had a physical relationship with Clinton when she was a White House intern, and Tripp began to secretly record their talks. She also encouraged Lewinsky to document her relationship with the president.

Tripp also claimed that her motives were purely patriotic. She was also able to avoid a wiretapping charge in exchange for handing in the tapes. Tripp also claimed that her firing from the Pentagon at the end of the Clinton administration was vindictive. However, the administration claimed it to be a standard routine.

Tripp was born to Albert Carotenuto (Father), who was an American soldier stationed in Germany, and Inge Carotenuto (Mother) was a German national whose family home was destroyed during Allied bombings. Her parents married in Frankfurt, Germany. Linda’s parents moved to Whippany, New Jersey, 30 miles from New York City. Her father was then a high school math and science teacher and her mother was a homemaker.

Tripp was close to her mother but her relationship with her father was testy. Albert was a stern disciplinarian, despite the best efforts of her mother to persuade him to not be so quick with corporal punishment. During Tripp’s senior year in high school, her mother discovered that her father was having an affair with a fellow teacher, and he walked out of the family a short time later. Her parents divorced in 1968. Their divorce was very bitter according to Tripp and she was angered and humiliated. She also refused any relationship with her father and developed a strong dislike for adulterers.

Tripp attended Hanover Park High School in East Hanover, New Jersey from where she graduated in 1968. After her graduation, Tripp enrolled in a secretarial school. She served as an Army Intelligence secretary at Fort Meade. She was later transferred to the Pentagon in 1987.

Tripp met Bruce Tripp, a military officer in 1971 and the two fell in love and got married. However, Tripp pointedly refused to invite her father to her wedding. She now became a military wife and she now lived on military bases mostly in Europe and The couple has two children together.

Her own marriage to Tripp fell apart in 1990 but she remained on civil terms with her ex-husband. After their divorce, Linda moved to Washington, D.C., and now began to focus on her career.

On December 30, 2004, Tripp married Dieter Rausch. Rausch is an architect and manages The Christmas Sleigh, a German holiday store that also sells handmade Austrian clothing. Tripp and her husband lived in Germany and also Northern Virginia. She and her husband Dieter Rausch owned and ran a year-round holiday store, The Christmas Sleigh in Middleburg, Virginia from 2002.

“My mommy is leaving this earth. I don’t know if I can survive this heartache. Please pray for a painless process for the strongest woman I will ever know in my entire lifetime.”

Lewinsky also showed concern for Tripp and her family. “no matter the past, upon hearing that Linda Tripp is very seriously ill, I hope for her recovery. I can’t imagine how difficult this is for her family,” Lewinsky wrote in a tweet.
