Who is Lin Brehmer?
Lin Brehmer was a recognized disc jockey and radio personality at WXRT in Chicago. He hosted mornings on WXRT from 1991 to 2010, and middays from 2020 until taking a leave of absence to undergo chemotherapy in 2022.
Lin Brehmer Career
He started working professionally in radio in January 1977. Brehmer’s first disc jockey job was in Albany, New York at WQBK-FM, where he got the nickname, ”The Reverend of Rock and Roll.” Following 7 years at WQBK, he exited the position and moved to Chicago to work for WXRT as music director starting in October 1984.
In the 6 years at WXRT, he was named ”Music Director of the Year” by FMQB three of those years. Hard Report’s readers voted him as ”Music Director of the Decade”, in 1989. Brehmer exited WXRT and moved to Minnesota for a job as program director of KTCZ-FM in October 1990. Following completing a one-year deal at KTCZ-FM, he went back to Chicago’s WXRT to work as the morning D.J., taking the place of Terri Hemmert. For the past 20 years at WXRT, he has been hosting a yearly remote broadcast for The Chicago Cubs’ home opening day. He was also the first non-Cleveland D.J. to broadcast live from the radio studio of the newly opened Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on September 1, 1995.
Brehmer’s catchphrase, ”it’s great to be alive”, was taken from the 1972 Frank Zappa and The Mothers album, Just Another Band from L.A. He describes himself as ”your best friend in the whole world” and is on-air between 10:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Lin started writing and broadcasting essays entitled, Lin’s Bin in 2002. The essays were developed from responding to listeners’ letters and continued as responses to emails. Every year, he writes just under a hundred essays. Brehmer said that he has written around 1800 pages of Lin’s Bin. The essays are written and pre-recorded with producer Peter Crozier. However, they have not been published as a book to date.
Illness and death
On July 12, 2022, he revealed on air that he had been battling prostate cancer and was taking a leave of absence from WXRT, beginning after July 15, 2022, in order to undergo chemotherapy. Brehmer died on January 22, 2023.
