Who is Libby Schaaf?

Libby Schaaf ( Elizabeth Beckman) is an American politician serving as the mayor of Oakland California since 2015. In addition, Libby is a member and a strong supporter of the  Democratic Party. Moreover, prior to being the mayor, she served on the Oakland City Council.

She won the mayoral position on November 4, 2014, in the 14th round in ranked-choice voting with 62.79% of the vote. In addition, she won the re-election in 2018 with a 27% margin.

Career

Early Career

Prior to joining politics, she was working as a lawyer at the law firm of Reed Smith LLP. After that, she became the program director for the Marcus A. Foster institution in 1995. At the Institution, she was creating and running a new volunteer program for the Oakland Unified School District.

She started working for the government as the legislative aide to Oakland City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente and special assistant to Oakland mayor Jerry Brown.

Moreover, she joined the Port of Oakland as Director of Public Affairs in 2006. At the port, she helped win state and federal funds for the city of Oakland while also coordinating all strategic communications for the port. Moreover, she showed her support for the FF, which is also known as a Lift Up Oakland, a $12.25 minimum wage ballot initiative that passed in a landslide on November 4,m 2014.
