Larry Sanders is an American former well-known professional basketball player. In his career, he has played forward for the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams before declaring himself eligible for the 2010 NBA draft. Where he was by the Milwaukee Bucks 15th overall.

He did not play basketball until ninth grade as the private school he attended did not offer it. But after he transferred to Port St. Lucie High School, the school’s basketball coach Kareem Rodriguez saw potential in the then 6’11” Larry. As he was advancing, his height advanced too to 6;9″ in his senior year.

In his junior campaign, he began garnering statewide attention as he helped Port St. Lucie reach the Class 5A state semifinals. While averaging 18.9 points and 13 rebounds, in his senior year he led Port St. Luvie (20-8) to the District 13-5A Championship thus being named the First Team All-Stae by the Associated Press.

A College Career

While at college, he was keen to train under head coach Anthony Grant. While at VCU, his first 2 seasons he played 2nd star to guard Eric Maynor. He performed exemplary in that role and as a sophomore, he led the Rams into the 2009 NCAA Tournament against the UCLA Bruins, however, they lost 65-64 in the first round of the tournament. In his junior season, he went on to have a more prominent role after Maynor was drafted into the NBA. As a junior, he averaged 14.4 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks, with 53% field-goal accuracy, and earned his way to earning the second of his consecutive CAA Defensive Player of the Year awards in 2008-09 and 2009-10. In April 2010, he announced after his junior year that he was departing VCU early in order to enter the NBA Draft.

A Professional Career

A Career with Milwaukee Bucks (2010 to 2015)

Larry was chosen with the 15th overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. He went on and signed a multi-year rookie scale contract with the Bucks on July 8, 2010. However, he was assigned to the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA D-League on February 20, 2011, but was recalled by the Bucks on February 26, 2011. He recorded his only career triple-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 blocks on November 30, 2012, in a loss to Minnesota. Overall, he finished the season second in blocks per game behind Serge Ibaka.

And also finished third in voting for the NBA Most Improved Player Award after Paul George and Grevis Vasquez. Larry extended his contract to a four-year $44 million on August 20, 2013. After sustaining a torn ligament, he was sidelined for 25 games in December 2013. It was announced on March 20, 2014, that he would miss the rest of the season due to a fractured right orbital bone. That same year on April 4, he was given a five-game suspension for violating the NBA’s drug policy after testing positive for marijuana. He was placed on Bucks’ inactive roster in December 2014, due to personal reasons.

On January 7, 2015, after a seven-game absence, he appeared on the Bucks’ bench against the Phoenix Suns but did not suit up. Again for a second time, Larry violated the NBA’s drug policy during the 2014-15 season and on January 16, 2015, he was subsequently suspended without pay for a minimum of ten games. Following his second suspension for marijuana, it was announced on February 21, 2015, that the Bucks were buying out Larry’s contract. He announced on January 26, 2017, his decision to return to basketball.

A Career with the Cleveland Cavaliers 2017

He got signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers on March 13, 2017. And made his debut with the Cavaliers the following night in a 128-98 win over the Detroit Pistons. After appearing in five games, the Cavaliers waived him on April 12, 2017. During his time with the Cavaliers, he had multiple assignments with the Canton Charge of the NBA Development League.
