Who is KK?

Krishnakumar Kunnath prominently known as KK was an eminent Indian playback singer. Throughout his career, he recorded songs in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Bengali, Assamese, and Gujarati languages. He began his career by singing for advertisement jingles and made his film debut with an A.R. Rahman soundtrack. He launched his debut album titles, Pal, in 1999. His two songs from the album “Pal” and “Yaaron” became very popular and are commonly used in school farewells.


His other notable and hit songs include; “Tadap Tadap” from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), the Tamil song “Apadi Podu”, “Dola Re Dola” from Devdas (2002), “Kya Mujhe Pyaar Hai” from Woh Lamhe… (2006), “Aankhon Mein Teri” from Om Shanti Om (2007), “Khuda Jane” from Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), “Piya Aaye Na” from Aashiqui 2 (2013), “Mat Aazma Re” from Murder 3 (2013), “India Wale” from Happy New Year (2014) and “Tu Jo Mila” from Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), among others. Playback Singing Career

In 1994, KK moved to Mumbai after graduating from college. That same year, he gave his demo tape to Louis Banks, Ranjit Barot, and Leslie Lewis to get a break in the music arena. He was therefore called by UTV and he sang a jingle for the Santogen Suiting ad. In a span of four years, he sang more than 3,500 jingles across 11 languages. His breakthrough came when he was called to Mumbai with UTV to sing jingles. KK considers Leslie Lewis as his mentor for giving him his first jingle to sing in Mumbai. Moreover, he got his Bollywood breakthrough in “Tadap Tadap” from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999). However, before this song, he had sung a small portion of the song “Chhod Aaye Hum” from Gulzar’s Maachis (2016)

Albums and Television Career

Sony Music was launched in India in 1999, and they were looking to launch a new artiste. Therefore KK was selected as the new artiste and thus came out with his debut solo album titled Pal with Leslie Lewis composing the music. His debut album was arranged, composed, and produced by Leslie Lewis of Colonial Cousins. Songs from the album “Aap Ki Dua”, “Yaaron” and the title track “Pal” became hit songs and ruled the lips of youngsters & also the music chart. Also “Pal” and “Yaaron” became commonly songs used in school farewells. Pal became KK’s album released under Sony Music for which he got the Screen award as best singer.

His second album entitled Humsafar was released on January 22, 2008, after a gap of eight years. Songs from the album “Aasman Ke”, “Dekho Na”, “Yeh Kahan Mil Gaye Hum” and “Rain Bhai Kaari (Maajhi)” also became famous. Besides singing in the Indian language, he also sang an English Rock Ballad “Cineraria”. Humsafar has 10 songs 8 of them are composed by KK while the other 2 were taken from his previous album. In addition, he has sung many television serial songs including; Just Mohabbat, Shaka Laka Boom Boom, Kuch Jhuki Si Palkein, Hip Hip Hurray, Kkavyanjali, and Just Dance. He and Shreya Ghoshal sang the theme song for Star Parivaar Awards 2010.

KK appeared on television as a jury member for a talent hunt show Fame Gurukul. He has also sung for the Pakistani TV show The Ghost a song named “Tanha Chala” which aired in 2008 on Hum TV. The song got composed by Farrukh Abid and Shoiab Farrukh, while Momina Duraid penned the lyrics. In addition, KK participated in the latest musical venture of MTV India Coke Studio. There he sang along with Sabri Brothers one qawwali “Chadta Suraj” and a recomposed version of his exquisite track “Tu Aashiqui Hai” from the movie Jhankaar Beats.

On January 11, 2014, he performed in Sony Mix TV Show and MTV Unplugged season 3 which aired on MTV. That same year in April, he was in Dubai for his concert ‘Salaam Dubai 2014’. Moreover, he did concerts in Goa, Dubai, Chennai, and Hong Kong. He went on and appeared on the television singing reality show Indian Idol Junior Season 2 on August 29, 2015.
