Who is Kim Reynolds?

Kim Reynolds ( Kimberly Kay Reynolds) is an American politician, currently serving as the 43rd Governor of Iowa since 2017. In addition, she is also a member of the Republican Party. Prior to becoming the governor, she served as the 46th Lieutenant Governor of Lowa for a person of 6 years from 2011 to 2017.

Furthermore, prior to becoming the Lieutenant Governor, Kim was working in the Iowa Senate, where she worked for a period of one year starting 2009 to 2010. Kim became the Governor in May 2017, after Terry Brandstad, resigned from the position in order to become a US Ambassador to China. She vied for a full term as governor in the 2018 gubernatorial election.

Career

Iowa Senate

As a Clarke County Treasurer, she served for four terms. After that, she was elected as a Republican on November 4, 2008, to represent the 48th district in the Lowa Senate, beating Ruth Smith, a Democratic nominee, and Independent candidate Rodney Schmidt. She was one of those, who supported a ban on same-sex marriage in Iowa.

Lieutenant Governor of Iowa

Terry Branstad, a Republican nominee on June 25, 2010, announced publicly that he was going to appoint Kim as his running mate for the gubernatorial election. The following day, she received the Republican nomination from the 2010 Republican State Convection. As a result of their successful campaign, Branstad/ Reynolds ticket won the general election on November 2, 2010. After that, she stepped down from her Senate Seat on November 12th the same year, before taking the office as the new lieutenant governor.

On January 14, 2011, Reynolds took the oath of office. Reynolds took office as Iowa’s governor for the first time on January 18, 2019. In May 2018, she signed legislation to overhaul Iowa’s energy efficiency policies. Reynolds signed a fetal heartbeat law, one of the most stringent abortion restrictions in the United States, in May 2018. In January 2019, an Iowa state judge deemed the statute unlawful and overturned it. Reynolds has requested that the bill be amended to state that it does not protect abortion rights.

A truck driven by an Iowa State Patrol officer transporting Reynolds collided with a Black Lives Matter demonstrator in Ackley in June 2020. The State Patrol and Reynolds said that the protester purposefully walked in front of the vehicle’s route and that the driver behaved lawfully, whereas the protester claimed that he was purposely struck.
