    High school career

    Initially, Johnson attended Norview High School prior to transferring to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, prior to his junior year. He then played at IMG for one season prior to transferring again to Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia for his senior season. This was after his head coach, Vince Walden, left the school to become an assistant coach at Arkansas State. During the Nike EYBL finals at Peach Jam, he averaged 12.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Johnson scored at least 18 points in 19 of Oak Hill’s games, as a senior. He was rated as a four-star recruit by 247Sports and ESPN, and he committed to playing college basketball for Florida against an offer from Texas Tech while also earning interest from Providence, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Minnesota, and Wake Forest.

    College career

    In 2018, he started his true freshman season as a key reserve and finally became the Gator’s starting small forward going into the team’s game against Georgia. Johnson began the last 20 games of the season and completed the season with 8.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. He then averaged 13.7 points and 10 rebounds during the 2019 SEC men’s basketball tournament, as the team went on to the tournament semifinal. Johnson scored 20 points and 12 rebounds in the opening round against Arkansas, a double-double.

    He later scored a career-high 25 points to go with 11 rebounds in an 81-66 win over LSU, on February 26, 2020. He averaged 14 points, 7.1 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.2 steals per match and was named first-team All-SEC, as a sophomore. Johnson then collapsed on the court in a game at Florida State on December 12, 2020. When he arrived at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital, doctors assessed him to be in critical, but stable condition. Following 3 days in a medically induced coma at Tallahassee Memorial, he was taken back to Gainesville, Florida for more treatment. It was then reported that he was awake, speaking, and responding to commands on December 15. Head coach Mike White later revealed that he had rejoined the team as a coach on December 28. On March 5, 2022, he was revealed as the honorary starter on Senior Day against Kentucky and received a standing ovation. Johnson then joined the transfer portal on May 1.

    Kansas State

    Johnson committed to Kansas State on August 20, 2022. He was then named Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and joined teammate Markquis Nowell on the First Team All-Big 12.
