 Who is Kate Moss?

Kate Moss, (Katherine Ann Moss), is a British professional supermodel and businesswoman. She rose to prominence in the early 1990s as part of the heroin chic fashion trend after the conclusion of the ”supermodel era”. Moss is famous for her waifish figure, and role in size zero fashion. She has had her own clothing range, has been involved in musical projects, and is a contributing fashion editor for British Vogue.

Moss came second on the Forbes top-earning models list, with estimated earnings of $9.2 million in one year. The awards she has acquired for modeling include the 2013 British Fashion Awards acknowledging her contribution to fashion over 25 years. Time also named her one of the world’s 100 most influential people in 2007. A subject of media scrutiny because of her party lifestyle, she was involved in a drug use scandal in September 2006. This led to her being dropped from fashion campaigns. Moss was cleared of charges and soon returned to modeling. She has also inspired cultural depictions such as a £1.5m ($2.8m) 18-carat gold statue of her, sculpted in 2008 for a British Museum exhibition.

Kate Moss Career

Beginnings and ”heroin Chic”

Kate was recruited as a model by Sarah Doukas, founder of Storm Management, at JFK Airport in New York, following a holiday in The Bahamas at the age of 14 in 1988. Corinne Day then shot black-and-white photographs of Moss, styled by Melanie Ward, for The Face when she was aged 16, in a shoot called ”The 3rd Summer of Love”. She was presented as a young unknown, and Day described the pictures as ”dirty realism” or ”grunge”. Moss was later featured in Levi’s campaign ‘Levi’s for Girls’, with great success, set up by The Design Corporation and shot again by Corinne Day.

Another shoot followed for The Face, by Tony Briggs, called ”Haute Coiffure”, she continued to become the ”anti-supermodel” of the 1990s compared to models of the time. The models included Elle Macpherson, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, and Naomi Campbell, who were recognized for curvaceous and tall figures. In 1996, Moss featured in the fashion look heroin chic, (leading to speculation over her weight) with a campaign for Calvin Klein. Then-US President Bill Clinton spoke out against the trend.

Drug allegations

The Swedish fashion retailer H&M dropped Moss from its campaign of autumn clothes designed by Stella McCartney due to drug allegations on September 20, 2005. The deal was reportedly worth £4 million a year. The following day, Chanel stated it would not renew its contract with her, which was to expire that October, despite its decision not having anything to do with the drug scandal. Burberry also dropped her campaign with them, and she apologized, despite stopping short of admitting drug use. She then appeared in ad campaigns for Dior. Moss was on the cover of the November 2005 W and also inside a multi-page fashion shoot.

She was defended by designer Alexander McQueen, who, during his walk-out following a fashion show, wore a T-shirt stating ”We love you, Kate”. Moss was also supported by artist Stella Vine, and paintings by Vine, painted during the scandal, were exhibited and reproduced in the press. Later, the London Metropolitan Police asked Kate to go back from the US to Britain to answer questions about the September 2005 cocaine scandal on January 5, 2006. British police dropped the charges due to a lack of evidence on June 16, 2006. Ultimately, she was cleared of all charges and went back to her modeling career. She was then escorted off an EasyJet flight by police after she became disruptive in 2015.
