An Early Career
Having studied journalism at university and after earning his degree, he could not secure a cadetship. Thus his father suggested he audition for NDA but did not make the final cut despite making I through a few rounds of auditions. The following year even though he was encouraged to re-apply, instead he took a job offer from WIN Television in Rockhampton. He then began working for WIN in Rockhampton and Cairns in 1994 as a cadet reporter. In 1996, he took up a position with TVNZ as a reporter for One Network News in New Zealand. He made his return to Australia in 1998 with a job reporting and presenting for Ten News in Brisbane and also acted as a fill-in news presenter for Ron Wilson in Sydney.
A Career at Nine Network
Karl moved to the Nine Network in 2000 as a reporter and backup presenter for Nine News in Brisbane. That year also, he received a Queensland Media Award for Best News Coverage for his report on the Childers backpacker hostel fire. His reports on the 2001 Warragamba bushfires from Sussex Inlet in January 2002 led to his appointment to Nine’s Sydney newsroom, and he was involved in the coverage of the 2003 Canberra bushfires. In February 2005, he replaced Today host Steve Liebmann. And since he has been a fill-in host on A Current Affair for Tracy Grimshaw.
Next, he participated in the Nine Network reality television show Torvill and Dean’s Dancing on Ice in 2006. Eventually, he made it to the grand final of the show but was beaten by Jake Wall by a viewer poll.
