He was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and was brought up nearby in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. Previously, he played for the San Jose Sharks and the Philadelphia Flyers.

Early Career
Braun began playing ice hockey in high school at White Bear Lake Area High School, in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. In his sophomore year, he made it to the varsity ice hockey team. He assisted lead the team to two state tournament appearances, consisting in 2005 when he served as team captain. After high school, Braun scored 13 points (2 goals and 11 assists) in the 69 games he played in two seasons with the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League (USHL).
The University of Massachusetts Amherst revealed on May 24, 2006, that Braun and five other players would join the UMass Minutemen ice hockey that fall. On October 13, 2006, he scored his first college point, assisting Kevin Jarman in a 3-2 win against the Sacred Heart Pioneers. On January 27, he scored his first collegiate goal against Boston University. He was picked as the Minutemen’s Rookie of the Year, with four goals and seven assists. Braun was also named to the Hockey East All-Rookie Team. He was then picked by the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League (NHL) in the seventh round, 201st overall, of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
Professional career
Justin made his first NHL breakout on the 2010-11 season against the Vancouver Canucks on November 26, 2010. His initial point came the next night in a game against the Edmonton Oilers. Braun’s first NHL goal was in his fourth game against Pascal Leclaire of the Ottawa Senators on December 2, 2010. Later he scored his first goal since February 21, 2012, a 95-game stretch without a goal against the Canucks on October 4, 2013.
On June 18, 2019, following the completion of his ninth season with San Jose in the 2018-19 season, he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers. He was exchanged for a 2019 second-round draft pick and a 2020 third-round selection. He then decided to forgo free agency and signed a two-year, #$3.6 million contract deal with the Flyers on October 5, 2020. Later, he was traded to the New York Rangers in the 2021-22 season with the Flyers out of playoff contention. He was exchanged for a 2023 third-round selection on March 21, 2022.
