From 2011 to 2014, he played college hockey at the University of Nebraska Omaha. In November 2011, he was then selected as the WCHA Rookie of the Week. While at Nebraska Omaha, he played on a line with future Pittsburgh Penguins teammate Jake Guentzel. His career at NCAA was exemplary as he was a finalist in 2013-14 for the Hobey Baker Award, thus making him one of the ten best players in the men’s college hockey. A Career with the Pittsburgh Penguins
Josh signed on May 16, 2014, a three-year entry-level contract with the Pittsburgh P[enguins. On March 5, 2016, he made his NHL debut in a home game against the Calgary Flames but was soon reassigned to the Penguins AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. On February 11, 2017, he was recalled back to the Penguins. This is when he scored his first 2 NHL goals in a game against the Arizona Coyotes. However, two games later he was returned to the Penguins AHL affiliate Wiles-Barre/Scranton Penguins. He was recalled again in late March and competed in the 2017 Stanley Cup Finals. He re-signed with the Penguins on July 12, 2017, on a two-year, one-way contract with an average annual value of $675,000. Josh in the 2017-18 season made the Penguins’ opening night roster. He was again reassigned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on December 1, 2017, for a period of time.
A Career with the Arizona Coyotes
The Penguins on December 19, 2017, traded Josh along with Sean Maguire and a 6th-round pick in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft to the Arizona Coyotes. This was due in exchange for Michael Leighton and a 4th-round pick in 2019. After the 2018-19 season, the Coyotes chose not to tender Josh a qualifying offer thus he was released into free agency.
A Career with the Edmonton Oilers
He was signed by the Edmonton Oilers on July 16, 2019, to a one-year contract. Having played on the checking line shortly into the 2019-20 season with Jujhar Khaira and Riley Sherman, he fractured his right foot under unspecified circumstances. Despite returning from injury, he did not score a goal up until December 1 when he was promoted to the top line alongside Connor McDavid. Josh had not been a permanent fixture in the top line, he was the first to be promoted during the 2019-20 season as one of McDavid’s usual partners was unavailable. The Oilers on March 7, 2020, signed him to a two-year contract extension that would take him through the 2021-22 season.
The following week due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NHL chose to suspend the regular season indefinitely. At the time of the pause, Josh had 12 goals and 21 points in 62 games. When the NHL resumed in July to play for the 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs, Josh was one of 31 Oilers invited into the Edmonton “bubble”. In the playoffs, the Oilers lost 3-1 against the Chicago Blackhawks in the qualifying round. Oilers’ medical staff announced on October 3, 2021, that Josh would be out indefinitely because of myocarditis, which developed after he contracted COVID-19 during the summer of 2021. By March 21, 2022, he had fully recovered and returned to the Oilers roster.
