Who Is Joni Ernst?

Joni Ernst (Joni Kay Ernst) is an American politician, currently serving as a junior US senator for Iowa since 2015. Joni is a member of the Republican, previously she served in Iowa State Senate from 2011 to 2014. In addition, she has also served in Iowa Army National Guard from 1993 to 2015, where she retired as a lieutenant colonel.

During her 2014 campaigns, she received support from the Koch Brothers and ads that garnered national attention. She was a close ally of President Donald Trump and people thought she will make a perfect running mate in his 2016 campaign.

Career

Early Career

Joni joining the ROTC program at Iowa State University while she was 20 years old. She then joined UIS Army Reserve after graduating. Furthermore, she served as a logistic officer and she was promoted to a higher rank of lieutenant colonel in the Iowa national guard. For a period of one year from 2003-2004, she was in Kuwait as a company commander of 1168th Transportation -Company during the war in Iraq. At the end of her career, she served as a commanding officer of the 185th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion at Camp Dodge. She has served for b23 years in Army Reserve and Army National Guard.

Political Career

In 2004, she was elected to Montgomery County Auditor. She was then elected again in 2008. After that, she was elected to the Iowa State Senate in a special election in 2011 and then reelected in 2012, in southwestern Iowa. After her election to the US Senate, Joni stepped down from Iowa State Senate which took effect on November 28, 2014.

2014 Election

In July 2013, Joni confirmed that she was going to run for the Senate seat which was being held by Democratic Senators Tom Halking. She was endorsed by Iowa lieutenant governor Kim Reynold in October 2013. After that, she was also endorsed by former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and also former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.

Joni was boosted in the Republican primary by the Koch brothers with a hundred of thousands of dollars worth of TVs ads and tens of thousands of dollars in a direct campaign contribution. She got nationwide attention due to her advertisement released in March 2014, where she was comparing her experience of castrating pigs under the ability to cut ports in congress. Before the ads were aired she was struggling to raise funds and two polls of the Republican primary held in February 2014, had shown her in second place with points behind Mark Jacob.

After the ads aired, the Suffolk University poll in early April showed her with a narrow lead and a Loras College poll showed her a tied with Jacobs. During the primary, Ernst supported a conspiracy theory. That stated that the United Nations sustainable development program, Agenda 21, would move farmers off their land and force them to live in towns, but she later stated that the idea was not a “threat” to them.

In July, Ernst gave the Republican Party’s weekly speech, condemning the Department of Veterans Affairs’ health-care fiasco. The department and pushing for a federal budget and Social Security and Medicare overhaul. However later that month she had to hold her campaign while she was attending two weeks of National Guard duty.

Joni won the 2014 Senate, election receiving 52.2% against her opponent who had 43.7 %. Furthermore, she is the first woman to be elected in Iowa in either house of Congress.

2020 Election

In 2020, she was seeking reelection where she ran unopposed in the Republican primary. However, during the general election, she was competing against the Democratic nominee There’s Greenfield, a businesswoman and a former congressional candidate in general education. The race was tight but Joni was seen as the strong candidate and she ended up winning the election with 52% to 45 %.

On January 3, 2015, Ernst was sworn into the United States Senate, making him Iowa’s first new senator since Tom Harkin in 1985. On January 20, she gave the official Republican response to the State of the Union address.

Chris Cillizza placed Ernst on his shortlist of potential vice presidential running mates for Donald Trump as he ran for President of the United States in May 2016. She was also listed by other news sources as a potential asset to Trump’s campaign. Ernst said on June 16 that no one had “reached out” to her and that she was fine with that.

In 2017, Ernst asked Secretary of Defense candidate James Mattis if he would commit to cutting wasteful spending and stopping sexual assault in the military, to which Mattis agreed. In March, after photographs of women were released. Naked soldiers on Facebook, Ernst said this “The kind of activity creates a culture that leads to sexual assault.” In a press conference two weeks later, he asked Congress to pass a law that required people to immediately report suspected sexual assault in government facilities
